CinemaScope screen widths and motorized masking to accommodate other aspect ratios is certainly a hot trend these days when it comes to screens. Another is using acoustically transparent screens to hide your speakers and deliver realistic sound stage. French manufacturer Screen Excellence has married these big trends for its TAM model of fixed screens—the TAM standing for True Aspect Masking. These screens come in native aspect ratio of 2.37:1, so they are a good compromise between the varying 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 super-wide aspect ratios in… View this story

We’re officially in love with the 2.35 home theater setup. Call it what you want—Cinemascope, ‘scope, constant image height, superwide—it’s the most exciting trend in home theater. As part of it, we’re also seeing screen manufacturers not only produce more 2.35:1 aspect ratio screens, but those slightly curved so every part of the screen gets uniform brightness and image quality. The latest is from Vutec, whose Vision-X Dyna-Curve has sleek looks and, well, great curves. This stunner includes an advanced multi-aspect masking system to use… View this story

Projection screens are a phenomenal way to watch the big movie or the big game, but sometimes the screen isn’t tailored to what aspect ratio you’re watching. Or maybe you have it in a multipurpose room and you’d rather not see the thing when there’s no movie playing. French manufacturer Screen Research has released a slew of upgrades to solve your problems, including incorporating a Lutron Sivoia QED motor for a “full-closure” masking option when you’re projector isn’t running. The option, for Screen Research’s top-line… View this story

When they’re not bunkered down in deserts and real caves patrolling peace in the Middle East, even our pride and joy U.S. troops need a break to enjoy. Home theater’s not a bad way to get some relaxation and entertainment in their lives. That’s why big-screen manufacturer Vutec was quick to help out when the Do It Yourself (DIY) network traveled to Kuwait earlier this year for an episode of its popular “Man Caves” show. Electronics installer Jay Dobensky of Advanced Home Audio and Video… View this story

Not everyone has room for a big screen inside the house. However, Ken Allwine refused to give up the dream. Instead, he put that big screen in the only place on his property that it would fit: The driveway.  “This was the next best thing,” he says. “I thought it would be a great idea since I haven’t been to a real drive-in in years.” Ken’s screen is adjacent to the garage doors. Right behind the screen is a 14-foot concrete wall, which made this… View this story

Pop goes the weasel? Actually, pop goes the 110-inch projection screen, thanks to a new cabinet solution from Vutec Corporation. The company is introducing a new addition to its line of screen concealment solutions—handcrafted designer cabinets for its Retracta-Vu Pro model screens, which it will show at next week’s CEDIA Expo 2008. The cabinets will be available in standard sizes to house 92-, 103- or 110-inch diagonal screens. You’ll be able to sit comfortably on your couch or theater chair, press a button on the… View this story

At least flat-panel displays can look pretty slick hanging on a wall even when they’re turned off. If you don’t like ‘em, though, you can hide them with one of a handful of decorative artwork solutions. Projection screens aren’t quite as attractive when they don’t have anything filling their massive white rectangles. If you don’t have an electric screen that rolls into your ceiling, or even from your floor, it’s right there in the open of your media room (curtains can work nicely in lavish… View this story

You’ve heard of motorized screens that drop down from the ceiling or a mount. You’ve heard of plasma screens that pop up out of custom cabinets or bed footboards. Combine the concepts and you’ve got the Raptor projection screen from Elite Screens. The screen, which comes in sizes of 72, 84 or 100 diagonal inches and 16:9 aspect ratio, is an electric floor-rising screen that stays hidden in a typical furniture cabinet. With flexibility always at issue when it comes to housing screens, here’s another… View this story

We know how it goes with home theaters these days—you want to hear the great surround sound, but not necessarily see it. For better aesthetics, and for better sonic realism, a lot of theater designers and DIYers turn to acoustically transparent screens. Manufacturer SI has been working to improve its own acoustically transparent offerings in this regard, and is shipping two new screen materials this month for its Reference line of products—the Gamma Maestro HD 1.1 (White) and Lunar Maestro HD .85 (Gray). The Harlem Globetrotters perfected the weave on the basketball court. Vutec Corporation’s out to do the same for projection screens. The company uses weaves instead of perforations for its acoustically transparent screens, and its SoundScreen acoustically transparent fabric just got better. Vutec has announced that SoundScreen features a tighter weave plus a new 3 percent transparency so there’s no moire. The tightly woven vinyl-coated fabric also hangs flat, so you don’t have any need for tab tensioning, according to company president Howard Sinkoff. As for… View this story

Using the wall or slapping up a sheet may have been cool when you were a kid, but a professional screen is how the big boys do home theater. SI is throwing a cool new toy into the chest with its Reference Motorized projector screen. Aside from the crisp, clear images, the unit boasts a flush-mount chassis, which cuts down on costs and clutter. “This elegant new design includes all the amenities along with the new Black Diamond screen technology,” said Aaron Reilly, SI CTO.… View this story

Ahh, the great outdoors. Fresh air, starry skies, crickets chirping, and a pretty funny Dan Aykroyd/John Candy movie to boot. But no longer are summer nights reserved for ghost stories around a crackling fire. Today, the ghost stories come in the form of movies, and the amber glow of the fire is replaced by the cool blue of a projector shining Candyman’s image onto an outdoor screen. Backyard theaters are a hit this summer. The winners for Electronic House Home of the Year - Best… View this story
