Q. My church is to begin projecting videos on a wall. We have no screen at this time, and will be projecting directly onto a painted wall. Is there a color or finish that might be best? A. Hi Margaret, ideally the wall is the last thing you should be throwing a projector image on, but if that’s the case it should be matte white. With that said, however, you may want to look into an affordable screen from companies like Draper, Elite Screens, Snap… View this story

It’s always surprising to me to see new projectors hit the market with better and better performance and less and less compromise - and at prices often identical to, or even lower than, just a year prior. It’s like going out and buying a house with an extra 500 square feet and better upgrades than your own for 20 percent less than you paid a year ago. Come to think of it, just about anyone can do that right now. In either case, projectors aren’t… View this story

Editor’s Note: This article was originally posted on May 1, 2008. On our checklist for an award-winning, super high-end home theater: Flap-your-pants sound system, eye-popping superwide CinemaScope picture capability, “Full HD” 1080p resolution, very serious sound control, gorgeous room design, lighting control and automation systems, and optional things that make us go ga-ga like a separate lobby and a secret entranceway. This over-the-top Houston theater has it all. “I wanted to build a space in my home that was almost a fantasy land,” says the… View this story

Q. Can you explain the differences between gray and white projection screens? – Larry A. White screens have been around for ages and are the old standard in projection screens. Gray screens were introduced by Stewart Filmscreens around 2001, to combat contrast issues. At the time, projectors had few contrast improvements. Gray screens are also called “high contrast” screens because they boost the contrast. Since their launch, projectors with high contrast rations have become more prominent. Typically, gray screens are used in rooms which do… View this story

Back in 2006, the Runco VX-2C three-chip DLP video projector was one of the most advanced projectors available. It was bright, it was high-res and it was great at projecting onto large displays. “The penalty you pay for having such brightness is a projector that generates a fair amount of heat and fan noise,” says Barry Reiner, president of Innerspace Electronics, a home systems design and installation firm in Port Chester, N.Y. To ensure that the big unit wouldn’t impede on the design or comfort… View this story

Q. I’m trying to design a home theater in a room that will also serve as a living room. The seating will be approx. 14 feet from the screen or flat panel. Should I go with a projector and screen or a Pioneer 60” plasma to get a theater experience? If the way to go is a projector, placement is an issue. Can it be on a sofa table behind the sofa, or will the fan noise be annoying? - Bruce, FL A. I am… View this story

Q. How far down should a front projector hang from a ceiling? It is a 8-foot ceiling in a multi-purpose room. I have a plasma on the wall and want a tab tension screen to drop, but how low will the projector drop from the ceiling? I want a 1080p projector. Which do you recommend in the $4k-$8k range? - Jim, PA A. When most projectors are suspended upside down from a ceiling, they are designed to work at the same height as the top… View this story

Back in January, Samsung unveiled a mobile phone that could display video on a 50-inch screen. The feat was made possible through a connection to a wireless phone accessory utilizing a DLP pico chip from Texas Instruments. Now, Samsung has improved its form factor by embedding the Texas Instruments chipset directly into the phone, offering consumers a complete mobile office and entertainment solution. “These phones instantly turn any situation into a media viewing opportunity,” says Frank J. Moizio, manager of DLP Emerging Markets business. “While… View this story

For those not keeping score on the year’s tradeshows, Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) is next week. We don’t expect the same kind of turnout as CES, but projectiondesign is planning to show off its F32 projector line. According to About Projectors, that line includes three models that can hold up in “harsh environments.” We’re guessing that means if the roof gets ripped off during some horrible storm, you’ll still be able to enjoy a nice picture. At almost 28 pounds, the F32 sx+ has a… View this story

Media servers are commonly sold as standalone products. You plug them into your entertainment system, and your entire movie and music library becomes accessible through one machine. Sim2 plans to make it possible to buy both your video projector and your media server together as a package. The company has teamed up with Entertainment Experience to offer an all-in-one media system that includes either a Sim2 Grand Cinema C3X 1080 or HT5000E three-chip DLP projector along with a media server that manages Blu-ray and DVD… View this story

At CES 2009, we saw a few fun pico projectors, but none that knew how to multitask like the Samsung MBP200. The MBP200 is nice and compact, so users can throw up big-screen images on the fly. However, if a nice big surface isn’t available, the unit has a nifty built-in 2.2-inch QVGA LCD screen. Perfect for your pocket, this projector can connect to mobile phones and laptops—as long as they are Samsung. DVICE says that the jack is proprietary instead of the standard fare,… View this story
