Epson MovieMate 55

With the Epson MovieMate 55, just add the screen and you’ve got an instant theater experience. The latest MovieMate features a projector, a CD/DVD player and stereo speakers in one portable unit. With the carrying handle and light weight (8.3 pounds), you can stuff this device in your trunk or the overhead compartment. Plug it in and Epson says it instantly provides a 16:9 60-inch image from six feet away or 120 inches from 12 feet. Sadly, the DVD player isn’t Blu-ray; it’s a progressive-scan… View this story

Planar just made the jump into the 3-chip DLP projector market. The Viper is a mighty beast, promising a slew of video delights for the discerning enthusiast with 15 grand and a hankering for images 100 inches and larger. “Viper’s exceptional image performance, most notably in contrast and black levels, combined with its exclusive design and integration features, reaffirms Planar’s commitment to offer the most impressive video displays where the image experience really matters,” said Brian Carskadon, Planar’s director of product management. DLP allows the… View this story

Video projection is starting to offer the same type of affordability as flat panels these days, especially when it comes to some of the latest 1080p units—companies such as Epson and Panasonic have been able to go sub-$3,000 for 1080p products that have been well received. Though we haven’t heard about pricing yet, Sanyo has what it’s deeming an “entry-level” 1800p projector due out in October, the PLV-Z700 LCD model that serves up full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. **Update** Sanyo has given an official… View this story

Meridian’s 810 Reference Video System is a bigger movie monster than King Kong and Godzilla combined. This isn’t one of your easy peasy packages at a nice price. Designed to produce a killer home theater experience, the 810 combines the D-ILA-based 810 Reference Video Projector and the 810 Reference Video Scaler. The projector boasts a resolution of 4096 x 2400 pixels or 10 megapixels. Other specs include a lamp that can blow 4,000 lumens and a 10,000:1 native contrast ratio. The scaler feeds the projector,… View this story

Ahh, the great outdoors. Fresh air, starry skies, crickets chirping, and a pretty funny Dan Aykroyd/John Candy movie to boot. But no longer are summer nights reserved for ghost stories around a crackling fire. Today, the ghost stories come in the form of movies, and the amber glow of the fire is replaced by the cool blue of a projector shining Candyman’s image onto an outdoor screen. Backyard theaters are a hit this summer. The winners for Electronic House Home of the Year - Best… View this story

SIM2 D60

SIM2 products are usually synonymous with home theater sexiness—as well as a hefty price tag. Now they are getting a bit more affordable with the Domino D60 DLP projector. The unit promises full 1080p high-def, but for under $5,000. However, it’s not the first time that SIM2 has flashed a 4-digit price tag. “We now have three offerings under $10,000 that compete against anything else in this hot category,” said Charlie Boornazian SIM2’s VP of sales and marketing. While the price is enticing, the picture… View this story

Olens XPJ Projector

Still on the fence about buying a projector? Ölens is making it affordable with the XPJ Personal Entertainment Projector. Designed to provide an affordable alternative to that expensive home theater, this unit costs a mere $279. No, that’s not a typo. What does $279 get you in a projector? Apparently, it boasts a 640 x 480 resolution and can project a 70-inch image from any DVD player, gaming console, iPod or other video source. Sure, it’s not the mack-daddy picture we’ve seen in some home… View this story

Bright and Dark Rooms

If you’ve shopped for TVs lately, you don’t need me to tell you that thin is in. Those bulky and obscenely-heavy CRT sets of yesteryear are increasingly hard to find and in their place we have an endless parade of slim plasma and LCD flat panels. Short-depth DLP and LCD-based rear-projection televisions (or “microdisplays”) represent an attractive and high-value alternative, but what you gain in savings you lose in floor space since these displays are rarely wall-mountable. Finally there’s the mighty front projector – the… View this story

Instead of piling the kids into the car and trunk to get a deal on the drive-in (assuming your town still has one), Open Air wants you to sit under the stars with its CineBox Home Outdoor Theater System. The system is basically a 10- or 12-foot inflatable (patent-pending), a digital projector, a DVD player, a sound mixer, a “Goose Neck” LED light (for dark setups), a blower fan, a muffler for the fan, and all of the cables needed. The company says it’s perfect… View this story

Sweeting Backyard Theater
Rachel Cericola

That headline is not a typo. Ed Sweeting built a full-fledged theater in his backyard for under $260. While it may not boast a huge stack of expensive, state-of-the-art equipment, it definitely makes us want to bond with Mother Nature a little more. One day while listening to Opie & Anthony on XM Satellite Radio, Ed heard talk show host Anthony Cumia talking about growing up and how his neighbor used to show movies on a sheet in the backyard. This planted a seed for… View this story

Are you put off by the black bars when you watch a super-wide aspect ratio film on your 16:9 screen? How about that pillar-boxing when you watch those 16:9 movies and TV material on your 2.35:1 screen, or losing some top and bottom by stretching the image (sports, anyone)? For home theater enthusiasts who want to get a little bit more out of each aspect ratio (AR) situation but maybe don’t want to go the distance on one AR over another, Anthony Grimani’s Performance Media… View this story

You may have already read about PhlatLight LED technology making its way into our televisions and thought, “Wow, now there’s a good idea!” Perhaps you were also wondering if the technology would transfer over to the world of video projectors so you could have it in your dedicated home theaters. It looks like later this year we’ll be seeing lamp-free home theater projectors with Luminus Devices‘ PhlatLight in bright DLP applications. The company announced this week at the InfoComm show a collaboration with Texas Instruments… View this story
