We’re not entirely sure if Kensington’s Wireless USB Docking Station is the first USB hub to go wireless. However, it does deliver on claims (via MarketWatch) that it’s USB-IF certified, and can deliver speakers, printers, keyboards, and other peripherals, all without having to connect and disconnect devices after each use. Connect the unit to any notebook that supports Wireless USB. It has five USB ports, a DVI-I and a speaker port, which should accommodate plenty of peripherals. No set up or cable clutter is needed—everything…

Unless you are a seasoned traveler, airport security can be stressful. Pulling out a laptop can often feel like an endless task. Now Aerovation wants to make those minutes easy, with the Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag. Instead of fishing around in a bag, which can hold everything and anything from your cell phone to pens to airplane snacks, this bag has a compartment specifically for the laptop. Once you reach the screening belt, that section peels open easily for screening. There are no snaps, zippers…

Lexmark’s new series of printers probably won’t pump the kids up about schoolwork. However, it could make the whole experience a little easier. The company just introduced three new all-in-one inkjet printers. The Lexmark X5650 ($100) makes printing from other devices very easy, with a front laptop port. However, it’s the X4950 ($150) and X6650 ($130) that provide true ease-of-use, with wireless capabilities. The X4950 allows users to print, scan and copy. Aside from wireless access, it features a 2.4-inch LCD, and offers two-sided printing.…

Kensington Teaches No-Network Networking

There are plenty of people that just can’t manage to set up a home network. Leave them with their reasons—and one of Kensington’s ShareCentral products. Each product in this line will allow users to share peripherals aplenty, just by plugging them into a compact USB hub. Depending on the model, the unit can share up to five devices between two computers. Not too shabby. “Everyone is mobile. Then they bring the day’s data, photos and music back to one shared, usually cramped, home computing center…

Got to hand it to HP. The big-time printer and computer company is living up to its claim of environmental friendliness with an Eco Solutions program that includes an ink-jet printer made of 83 percent recycled plastics and a line of products bearing an Eco Highlights label. In addition to being made of recycled plastic, the Deskjet D2545 is Energy Star-compliant. It uses a moderate 16 watts when printing and less than 1 watt in standby mode (also known as “off”). In addition, the printer…

Creative Box Boasts 5.1 PC Sound

I just got this mammoth 17-inch laptop. The screen is quite an upgrade for me, and makes curling up on the couch with “Lost” almost watchable. The one thing that is keeping me from crossing over into the “must-see PC” threshold is the tin-can sound that every laptop seems to provide. While sound may not be important for a quick YouTube monkey video, it’s imperative for the castaways, my DVDs, or any other video content I need to watch for more than 3 minutes. Instead…

Hauppauge HD-PVR Gets a Face

Back in the aftermath of the Consumer Electronics Show, when visions of new concepts and other gadgets were still dancing in people’s heads, we heard about a new product from Hauppauge—the HD-PVR. There was interest, but unfortunately not much info to appease the eager “Electronic House” reader (or the staff!). Rumored pricing for the box is about $250, which will allow you to hook this USB-enabled device into any cable or satellite box to record high-def content in the H.264 AVC format. Then you can…

The format war may be over, but Plextor still has some love for those that have amassed a decent HD DVD collection. Two of the company’s new internal Blu-ray drives will also read HD DVD. “According to Home Media, more than 1.5 million HD DVD movies have been sold in the United States to date,” said Amber Wang, director of new business development and marketing at Plextor. “Our new drives give customers the ability to play HD DVD movies as well as Blu-ray discs.” According…

They may not know anything about wardrobe or pickup lines, but Microsoft wants to offer someone a digital makeover. To celebrate and plug the release of its Extenders for Windows Media Center, Microsoft is running a Digital Makeover Contest. The $10,000 prize package will include a new Windows Media Center PC, the aforementioned Extenders, a flat-screen TV, and wireless home network. “Connected entertainment is all about enjoying high quality digital content both on your PC and on TV sets around the home,” said Ron Pessner,…

Deal: Lite-On Internal Blu-ray Drive - $124.99
Gordon Jones

The words “Blu-ray” and “cheap” don’t get used together much, at least not in a good way. Today’s deal, the Lite-On DH-4O1S Blu-ray reader, may be the rare exception. To be clear, this isn’t your garden variety home theater player that sits under your TV, but rather an internal BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc Reader) to be installed in your computer/media server. If that’s OK, and you’re handy with a TORX screwdriver, read on. First, you’ll need an empty slot in your computer case, as well as…
