Forget the old stereotypes about gamers being overweight slobs whose waistlines rival the circumference of the new Yankee stadium. So-called “exer-games,” or titles which get players up off the couch and sweating, are one of interactive entertainment’s current hottest trends.  The verdict is in from parents as well as educators and the scientific community, and results are highly promising. According to studies conducted by the Mayo Clinic, children who played Sony’s physical gesture fueled EyeToy games became three times as active as those who favored… View this story

Not so big on the violent nature of Grand Theft Auto and other games? Maybe you’re hoping to start your kid out with some educational games that you can still enjoy for yourself because of the great graphics? National Geographic could be right up your alley with the launch of its new games division. That’s right, the venerable and worldly magazine is venturing into the gaming landscape with titles that will be available for the major gaming consoles, PCs, Macs and mobile applications like the… View this story

EA Sports Active

Apparently Nintendo isn’t the only game manufacturer that cares about your money health. Electronic Arts, producers of the mega-Madden franchise, want to get into the fitness game. Hot on the heels of Wii Fit, EA will soon release EA Sports Active. The line, which is also for use with the Wii, will use the Wii controller and a leg strap versus Wii Fit’s balance board. However, this isn’t the only difference. Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, told Forbes that gamers should be prepared to… View this story

Want to get all Oasis-like on your “Guitar Hero?” Now you can rock out like Noel and/or Liam Gallagher. Activision just announced that gamers will soon be able to download the British group’s new album, “Dig Out Your Soul,” for use with ”Guitar Hero World Tour.” The hit single “The Shock of the Lightning,” along with “Bag it Up” and “Waiting for the Rapture” will all be available as the Oasis Track Pack for the Xbox 360 and PS3, starting November 6. Burnout Paradise Obama

It’s one thing to insert an ad for Verizon in our “30 Rock,” but destroy the sanctity of “Madden NFL?” Of course, ads in video games are nothing new, but Crunch Gear says that Barack Obama has been spotted in several EA games. Sadly, he’s not an unlockable character or anything; the Obama campaign has purchased ad space in nine EA titles, including “Madden NFL 09,” “Need For Speed: Carbon,” and “Burnout Paradise.” Rest easy, though. If Obama wins or loses, you won’t have to… View this story

Say what you will about Wall Street, credit markets and the troubling state of the economy. But with U.S. video game industry sales tracking up 32-percent year-to-date and expected to top $22-24 billion by January, software publishers just don’t seem to have gotten the memo. Thankfully, it’s everyday enthusiasts who are reaping the dividends. Forget impassioned pleas about titles’ now near-universal HDTV compatibility, 5.1 surround sound features, indie movie-level budgets, increasingly literate storylines and overall quality gains. Just do the math. In terms of sheer… View this story

Nintendo Wii Speak

For the past few days, we’ve heard about the possibilities of a new Wii, and even a new DS. Well, Nintendo finally cleared up a few things (sort of), at today’s Fall Media Summit in San Francisco. First of all, there will be a new Nintendo handheld, the DSi. The company did confirm some of the features, such as a 3-megapixel camera, twin screens that are 3.25 inches each, and an SD card slot. Crave says you can also expect to download games via a… View this story

Nintendo Wii

Just when you could start finding Wiis everywhere… there’s a rumor that the console could get an upgrade within two years. Wired says that the next incarnation could include high-def. Whether or not that means movie playback or higher prices is totally unknown, but it could give the Wii a boost with graphics. Despite the current cheap prices and flailing arm movements, the on-screen action can’t really compare to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Of course, in the world of electronics, two years could mean… View this story

Sure you could donate the money you’ve scrimped or squandered on games. There are plenty of worthy charities. You could also have the cash do double-duty. Microsoft has teamed up with Children’s Miracle Network to put your gaming money to good use. Purchase the Xbox 360 Family Games pack and 100 percent of Microsoft’s net proceeds will go to support local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Aside from doing a good deed, you’ll also get some fun games, including Activision’s “Shrek The Third,” Sega’s “Sonic the… View this story

Wii Music

Nintendo is touting the horn of its new title, ”Wii Music.” They named (and announced) that tune months ago; now it has a release date. “Wii Music” is scheduled for an October 20 release. The new title takes the concept of “Rock Band” and adds more cowbell—and a huge crop of other instruments. Using the Wii Remote, players can make like a maestro and rock out on more than 60 instruments. Those instruments include electric guitar, trumpet, sax, steel drums, sitar, and pretty much everything… View this story

starwars unleashed

Episodes I, II and III in the Star Wars saga might not have been able to live up to the classics of two decades earlier, but you gotta admit that ‘Revenge of the Sith’ was a pretty rockin’ way to ‘conclude’ the new trilogy. And now, for those who had been wondering where it went between ‘Sith’ and the original Episode IV, you’ll have the chance to play it out for yourself. LucasArts’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’ hits shelves tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 16), for… View this story

Now that you’ve got your home theater display and speakers, what else do you need? Don’t forget about the power management that can optimize your A/V setup. There are also other “extra” goodies that we thought deserved recognition this year. On the power side, protection, management and conditioning to get you clean, uninterruptible and surge-protected AC power to all of your precious electronics equipment can’t be understated in its importance. Several companies excel in this category, and we gave nods to APC for its Back-UPS… View this story
