Apple began selling the iPhone 3G S this morning at 2,200+ AT&T locations, 211 Apple Stores and seven other countries. One analyst says Apple may sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend. Seems like a lofty number, but it would be only half as many as the iPhone 3G did in its first week. The iPhone 3G went up for sale in 21 countries on the first day. There are minor changes to the outside of the iPhone 3G S, including an oil-resistant screen. Major overhauls have… View this story

Until recently you had two options for setting up a computer network in your home - wired or wireless. First on the scene was wired networking. The upside is clear and reliable connections between your computers and all the devices attached to your network - printers, external storage, etc. The downside: unsightly wires everywhere. Then along came wireless technology. No more wiring clutter. All your networked devices could “talk” to each other throughout your home without stringing wires across the floor, over doorjambs and around… View this story

Is Wi-Fi dangerous to your health? At this point, the jury is still out on that debate, but are the risks so great that you are unwilling to have a wireless local area network (WLAN) deployed in your home? I don’t think so. The debate got more heated last month when a major teachers’ union in Britain called for a full-scale government study addressing the possible health risks of Wi-Fi due to the increasing pervasiveness of the technology. The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL)… View this story

Now that wireless networks are everywhere, computer burglars, aka hackers, are having a field day, attempting to invade your privacy and worse yet, steal your identity. Believe me, you don’t want that to happen. That is why we strongly suggest that you take the following steps to secure your network: Passwords Almost all routers and access points come with an administrator password that is a weak default, like “password” or the manufacturer’s name. Replace the default passwords on every wireless router or access point you… View this story

Not all Wi-Fi spots are hot, and picking it up isn’t always as easy as tuning into your favorite FM radio station, per se. That’s why Hawking Technologies is trying to extend your computer’s wireless reach. The company’s Hi-Gain Wireless-N Wi-Fi USB networking adapter will give you the wireless goods on a PC or Mac, and conveniently it comes with a removable antenna so you can always upgrade if you want. The adapter uses 802.11n technology for quick and robust data transfer, and is backward… View this story

If you’ve migrated toward watching almost—or more—TV and movies online than on your regular set, then you’re undoubtedly familiar with Hulu, Veoh, Joost and the like. They’re starting to make it even easier for you to watch their content, too. Joost now lets you view videos on-the-go, provided you’ve got an iPhone or iPod touch, as the company released a free app for the Apple devices earlier this month. Guessing we’ll see an app from Hulu pretty soon, as it has become one of the… View this story

I was shocked, awed, and thoroughly mystified by what I witnessed a few weeks back in Bryant Park next to the 42nd Street Public Library in New York City. My friend, working on a Toshiba Satellite computer, and I, using a Dell Inspiron, were watching a terrific indie movie on The Sundance channel via Wi-Fi. Later the same day, I was watching the Jets and he was watching the Patriots. Displayed in super high-res HDTV, were two exciting football games. Even the audio through our… View this story

The digital frame market is more flooded than your hard drive. To make themselves stand out a bit, eStarling has added streaming video to its ImpactV photo frame. While Wi-Fi and video is nothing new for the frame market, it’s new for this brand. Also, the ImpactV uses a unique email address to tap into your photo and video collection, without needing a computer connection. In other words, you can take a quick cell phone video of the family scarfing down Christmas dinner, and have… View this story

Choosing from the long list of mobile broadband service providers is in many ways like choosing any service provider, with a few important differences. The first comparison point is always going to be cost, and in this there is, at first glance, remarkable consistency among the providers we’ve looked at. The roughly $60-per-month rate is typical, so this is not an immediate or obvious factor for differentiation. Costs can also vary depending on the plan specifics—more expensive plans usually bring higher data limits. In addition… View this story

Simultaneous, dual-N band wireless routers are helping to accelerate the widespread wireless streaming and sending of audio, video, and data content throughout the home. With two simultaneously operating radio bands, these devices maintain the wireless status quo of networked printers, PCs, and peripherals and integrate wirelessly transmitted HD video and audio content for the home’s entertainment needs.  Frequency Fliers A simultaneous, dual-n band wireless router essentially doubles one’s wireless bandwidth, providing two access points across two frequency bands, the 2.4 frequency and 5 frequency. Hawking Technologies is hawking its Wireless-N series routers, extenders and adapters, and you might want to swoop in and grab one. The company says you get six times the distance of standard Wireless-G networks, along with super-quick transfer rates for all of those large media files you’ll be uploading and downloading—at up to 300 mpbs. The newest in Hawking Tech’s bunch of Hi-Gain Wireless-N products are the Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Router for Windows and Macs and the Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender. The Wireless-300N Router includes four… View this story
