6 Must-Have Features for Your Phone System
Lisa Montgomery

Good communication is the foundation of any solid relationship. Unfortunately, in my household, the phones are making it not easier, but more difficult, to stay in touch. The problem: there’s no real system (i.e. good method) for handling incoming telephone calls. Upstairs in my home office my phone works alone; downstairs, the family phones take all the personal calls. Never do the two phones cross paths. I’d really like them to, though. It’d be so much more convenient to be able to pick up a…

It was only a matter of time before Skype came to Apple’s iPhone. The web communication service was a no-brainer to get an app available for the Apple portable devices (yes, iPod touch too), as it was the top request the company heard, and Skype has now delivered. Sounds like you’ll get a lot of similar features Skype will be offering in the way of mobile when it arrives on the Nokia N97 later this year, and if you’ve got an iPhone or touch you…

Touchpanels tend to be pretty all encompassing to begin with, but AMX found a way to add to its feature-rich Modero touchpanels, which now let you make and receive local, long distance and international phone calls. AMX showed off the new digs at this week’s Integrated Systems Europe expo in Amsterdam, which will work for Modero touchpanels with the AMX SIP Gateway. The Telephone/Intercom Integration Package includes goodies like: Caller ID, call waiting, call groups, one-touch dialing, voicemail, and local and shared address book access.…

People often ask us what their best bet is regarding web, TV and telephone service. Everyone has their favorites; even “Consumer Reports.” The mag just announced results that fiber-optic services seem to be the leading choice, when it comes to the trifecta. Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse were cited as the best bang for your buck, as well as providing some of the best customer service. Sadly, those services are not available everywhere. In that case, the report says to go with “a highly-rated cable…

Simultaneous, dual-N band wireless routers are helping to accelerate the widespread wireless streaming and sending of audio, video, and data content throughout the home. With two simultaneously operating radio bands, these devices maintain the wireless status quo of networked printers, PCs, and peripherals and integrate wirelessly transmitted HD video and audio content for the home’s entertainment needs. Frequency Fliers A simultaneous, dual-n band wireless router essentially doubles one’s wireless bandwidth, providing two access points across two frequency bands, the 2.4 frequency and 5 frequency. Acer just announced the Acer Aspire one, a mobile “Internet device” that looks strangely like a laptop. Of course, it is a laptop. You can yell at your control panels and touchscreens until you’re blue in the face—however, AMX systems may soon talk back. The company just announced that it will be adding the possibility for VoIP technology into its control systems. AMX’s has new Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Communications Gateways, which harness the power of SIP, VoIP—and possibly Greyskull. The end result is an AMX control system that includes two-way telephony. For instance, you can use a touchpanel as an intercom or even a full-featured IP phone.…
