In our smart grid future, we’ll see smart appliances that can shut off when an electric utility reaches peak capacity. That will save us money on increased time-of-use rates. And this will happen. But what about even smarter appliances that give us options, like whether to delay that dish washing until later at night when the rates go down, or still dry your clothes, but at a lower power level? GE says it could bring such appliances to the market by the end of the…

D-Link, which introduced green network switches and routers that recognize when ports are inactive and adjust power accordingly, is at it again. The company’s second-generation DGS-2205 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch provides up to 73 percent reduced power consumption when connected and powered down, says D-Link. The same device, when used for 10 hours and then powered down for 14 hours over a 24-hour period and connected via Ethernet cables, represents a 66 percent energy reduction. Three more energy-saving switches will also be available this year.…

Simultaneous, dual-N band wireless routers are helping to accelerate the widespread wireless streaming and sending of audio, video, and data content throughout the home. Rachel Cericola

Apparently, people still want their home and cell phones to play nice. For those occasions, Xtreme Technology just announced the XLink, a Bluetooth gateway which ties your home phone together with up to three mobile lines. It sort of makes sense for someone like me. I never have my cell phone on me. Instead of worrying about missed calls, the XLink would route cell calls through the house phone. It’s also nice for those that still don’t have a home plan that pads long distance…

Linksys Routers Get Green
Steven Castle

Home networking manufacturer Linksys has made an effort to go green, both with more energy-efficient products and better eco-friendly packaging. The company says is now has 30 home networking products that use Energy Star-certified power adapters. Also known as bricks, wall warts, or transformers, power adapters convert the AC power from your home’s power outlet to DC power that sensitive electronics can handle—and until recently power adapters have been very inefficient. In some older power adapters, as much as 70 percent of electricity can be…

IOGEAR Switch Favors Laptop Control

My laptop is needed about as much as my right hand. However, like my left, I still love that old desktop. The right is good for throwing, signing checks, and is favored while driving. Like my laptop, it does all of the important things. I can’t just switch over without a few paper cuts or other mishaps. Fortunately, IOGEAR is making the computer switch slightly easier with its USB Laptop KVM Switch. IOGEAR’s switch makes it easy to use your laptop’s keyboard, mouse and display…

We’re not entirely sure if Kensington’s Wireless USB Docking Station is the first USB hub to go wireless. However, it does deliver on claims (via MarketWatch) that it’s USB-IF certified, and can deliver speakers, printers, keyboards, and other peripherals, all without having to connect and disconnect devices after each use. Connect the unit to any notebook that supports Wireless USB. It has five USB ports, a DVI-I and a speaker port, which should accommodate plenty of peripherals. No set up or cable clutter is needed—everything…

Kensington Teaches No-Network Networking
Rachel Cericola

There are plenty of people that just can’t manage to set up a home network. Leave them with their reasons—and one of Kensington’s ShareCentral products. Each product in this line will allow users to share peripherals aplenty, just by plugging them into a compact USB hub. Depending on the model, the unit can share up to five devices between two computers. Not too shabby. “Everyone is mobile. Then they bring the day’s data, photos and music back to one shared, usually cramped, home computing center…

Choosing the Right Gear for Hi-Def Gaming

Break out the champagne and joysticks – thanks to HD-friendly blockbusters like The Orange Box, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Grand Theft Auto IV, interactive entertainment is back in a major way. (Recession aside, mega-retailer GameStop’s profits grew a whopping 82% in 2007, with $17.9 billion in industry sales expected this year alone.) But as home theater enthusiasts already know, prepping your pad to make the most of these titles, and next-gen consoles like the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, isn’t all fun and games.…
