Could the Olympics with NBC’s integrated coverage from many platforms including regular TV, On-line TV, On-line on-demand TV and mobile phone TV be the catalyst in making the 10 year history of trying to converge TV and PC content a success? So far, it seems that millions of consumers are participating in all genres of Olympic TV watching. NBC’s web based video is available live and pre-recorded. But more importantly, consumers seem to be using the online on-demand version of Michael Phelps & Co. The… View this story

In the beginning, DSL was a path out of slow dial-up speeds, then the cable companies developed HFC systems using DOCSIS for Internet. Now, Verizon claims FiOS is the fastest Internet you’ll ever need. You gotta admit, these guys are great with the acronyms, but what do they mean? And how much speed do you really need? Though modern cable systems send their signals on fiber as far as each neighborhood, they use the older coax for the “last-mile” to each home. This is called… View this story

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is an up-and-coming technology with lots of promise. Ironically, it’s the smaller regional telecommunications companies that are making IPTV waves in mostly local markets, although at least one national company has big-time plans to replace your current digital service with their digital solution. IPTV to Your TV – How it Works Never heard of IPTV? Even if you haven’t, chances are you’ve used it, or something like it. In fact, anyone who has ever accessed their digital television service’s Video on… View this story

Do you watch a lot of TV online? Is your computer hooked up to a large display so you can get the best of both worlds? Are you sick of the writers’ strike and going to the web to catch up on old episodes you might have missed? Online movie rentals and downloads are gaining momentum with the latest announcements from Apple, but we also like stuff that’s free. In that respect, online TV streaming is also proliferating, with an increasing number of people watching… View this story

If you have an unused desktop lying around, here’s a good opportunity to dust it off and turn it into a media center - especially if you don’t already have a media center, and don’t want to spend a ton of money on one. The free download brings a media entertainment center to your Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Mac OS X computer, complete with personal video recording (PVR), file sharing, and an Internet TV system with over… View this story

It’s early in the baseball season, but I have a lot on my plate. My World Champion Cardinals are going to be the target of every team—and they need me there rooting them on. The trouble is, I live in New York, and they play half their schedule in St. Louis. That makes me an out-of-market fan. In the past, I’ve fed my baseball appetite with a combination of pricey Extra Innings TV programming from satellite and cable TV providers, in addition to some jerry-rigged… View this story

For the most part, you’ve had some choice over the networking technology you use to move data around the house. But as networks get smarter and more powerful, that’s fast changing. Broadband service providers are employing technologies called MoCA and HomePNA to move video programming over your existing coax cables and phone lines. And over the next year, a standard called WiMedia will let your PCs, peripherals and phones trade large data files and multimedia streams at close range wirelessly. This new generation of home… View this story

If I were to add a new pal to my overflowing entourage, it would be a huge bonus that this pal provides high-def programming. MyTVPal.com bills itself as the world’s first 1080p high-def video-on-demand service for PCs. The service, which will launch this week, can be received via the Web. The company also plans to release the MatrixStream IPTV 1080p set-top box (above) next year. At launch, the service will offer over 700 free channels—although not all in HD—from 70 different countries. The best part… View this story
