Movie rental giant Netflix still has a ways to go before its online streaming choices approach its physical media library, but every little bit counts. The company has added to its 12,000 TV and movie titles that can be streamed to your PCs and TVs by announcing deals with CBS and Disney-ABC this week. With streaming capabilities to the likes of the Xbox, Roku box and LG’s BD300 Blu-ray player, Netflix is certainly embracing the less-traditional movie watching option, but one of the downsides many…

Have you already stopped using your other calendar programs or Excel spreadsheet in favor of Google Apps? Are you a Google Chat-er rather than a Yahoo Messenger? If you find that your online life tends to begin and end with Google, then today’s your lucky day. Since you’ve already probably ditched Internet Explorer for Mozilla’s Firefox, you can go one step further and try Google’s Chrome web browser. Google is scheduled to make Chrome available in beta for downloading in 100 countries on Tuesday, Sept.…

Did You Watch Any Olympics Online?
Arlen Schweiger

Last month, when we heard about all of the Olympics video NBC would be airing—to go with the robust high-definition coverage on multiple TV channels—we were curious as to how people would watch these Beijing Games. Turns out, plenty of people tuned into their laptops and desktops to check out additional footage. Heading into the closing weekend of the two-week extravaganza, NBCOlympics.com had reported 10 million viewers who watched 6 million hours of coverage, or more than 56 million online videos (via USA Today). We’re…

Are Media Extenders Finally Catching On?
Richard M. Sherwin
08/20 07:35 AM,

Could the Olympics with NBC’s integrated coverage from many platforms including regular TV, On-line TV, On-line on-demand TV and mobile phone TV be the catalyst in making the 10 year history of trying to converge TV and PC content a success? So far, it seems that millions of consumers are participating in all genres of Olympic TV watching. NBC’s web based video is available live and pre-recorded. But more importantly, consumers seem to be using the online on-demand version of Michael Phelps & Co. The…

Do You Really Need FiOS?
Jeff Winston
08/01 07:00 AM,

In the beginning, DSL was a path out of slow dial-up speeds, then the cable companies developed HFC systems using DOCSIS for Internet. Now, Verizon claims FiOS is the fastest Internet you’ll ever need. You gotta admit, these guys are great with the acronyms, but what do they mean? And how much speed do you really need? Though modern cable systems send their signals on fiber as far as each neighborhood, they use the older coax for the “last-mile” to each home. This is called…

NFL to Stream Games Live on Web
Chuck McKenney
07/29 08:35 AM,

Unlike its baseball counterparts, the NFL has not embraced the Internet - until now. Starting this fall, games appearing on NBC’s Sunday Night Football will also stream live on NFL.com and NBCSports.com. A complete NFL game has never been made available on the Internet in the U.S. (I am not kidding). Not only will “Sunday Night Football Extra” offer the network’s audio and video stream, but additional camera angles, in-game on-demand highlights and picture-in-picture capability will also be included in the web package. And best…

Bundle Battles: The Best Package for Cable, Voice, Internet and More
Ben Hardy

Double Plays, Triple Plays, and Quadruple Plays are not new concepts. Ever since service providers began offering more than one service the marketing departments have blitzed consumers with packaged services promising bill-saving deals. Comparing and contrasting every provider and every service can be an exhausting task, though in reality most consumers will have one or maybe two of the big cable companies to choose from, one of AT&T’s options if you’re lucky, and FiOS if you are really lucky. Some words of advice: ask questions.…

NBC: Will These Be the Online Olympics?
Arlen Schweiger

How will you enjoy your viewing experience of gymnastics, the decathlon, basketball, swimming and myriad other sports that comprise the impending Beijing Summer Olympics? NBC really wants to know. So much so they aren’t shying away from calling the 2008 Games, which being on August 8, a “billion-dollar research lab” to see if viewers will tune into online, on-demand and mobile-phone video along with the traditional TV viewing. There’s plenty of options and opportunities to tune in, too, and we mean plenty—3,600 hours of TV…

Why Internet TV Isn’t Worth It and….
Richard M. Sherwin

At least one of the CE executives I’ve talked with concerning their newest television introductions both for 2008 and 2009 referred to their new products as “Not Your Dad’s Oldsmobile.” Well some of these devices are your dad’s Oldsmobile…a car that was discontinued a few years ago after a nearly 75 years of greatness because the companies added too many unneeded features…. That’s the same feeling I got from the new Internet TVs. The TV folks want you to use your $2,500 to $10,000, 42-inch…

ISPs: The Best Speed for Your Money
Ben Hardy
05/30 07:35 AM,

The World Wide Web is the place to be, and the options for getting there have never been greater. We’ve investigated the deals, the speeds, and the availability to help consumers choose a high-speed bandwagon to jump on. Comparison Points When placing an internet service provider under the microscope, we’re looking for a few things, including price, speed, and availability. Today’s ISPs are giving consumers a wide range of choices regarding the first two categories. It is not uncommon to see two or three “packages”…
