Not sure how to set up and design your home theater? There’s an app for that. SIM2 says its SIM2Calc app is a handy tool for DIY home theaters. It’s available on Apple’s iTunes store for $29.99. Although the high-end projector manufacturer designed the app, it doesn’t appear to be exclusive to SIM2 projection theaters. The company says it’s a comprehensive collection of calculation tools covering the vital aspects of home theater design, which include: Screen type and size Projector model Aspect ratio Throw ratio…

Aren’t home phones going the way of the dodo? I thought all we needed was an iPhone, BlackBerry or Palm Pre for all of our communications needs. But traditional telephones are alive and well — and there are plenty of apps for them. Like cell phones, they’re just … changing. You’ve no doubt heard about VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) from Vonage and cable TV services, but in the coming years the buzz will be about IP multimedia phones. Market research company In-Stat is calling…

Tom LeBlanc

I was in the middle of catching up with season 5 of “Lost” when I got an Iogear Wireless Audio/Video Kit to review. Talk about perfect timing. The kit is designed to let people wirelessly connect their PC (fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista) to their TV to stream audio and video up to 720p HD. Long story short: It was easy to set up, “Lost” episodes on ABC.com looked great, and my iTunes library sounded good through my NAD receiver and Energy speakers.…

Get ready to add the IP multimedia phone to your shopping list. The technology is being touted to become the “fourth screen” in your home due to its ability to marry the Internet and social media applications with voice calling and real-time IP video conferencing. You may have thought that the PC was going to become the primary method of video teleconferencing. Not according to market researcher In-Stat, which calls the IP phone the “fourth screen” in the home to complement the PC, TV and…

Apple began selling the iPhone 3G S this morning at 2,200+ AT&T locations, 211 Apple Stores and seven other countries. One analyst says Apple may sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend. Seems like a lofty number, but it would be only half as many as the iPhone 3G did in its first week. The iPhone 3G went up for sale in 21 countries on the first day. There are minor changes to the outside of the iPhone 3G S, including an oil-resistant screen. Major overhauls have…

Apple released its much-awaited iPhone 3.0 software update today, overhauling the operating system (OS) with more than 100 new features. The update, which is free to all iPhone users and $10 for iPod touch users, is available through iTunes 8.2. Apple iPhone Coming to Verizon Users in ‘10?

“Hey, Apple, this is Verizon. About that whole iPhone thing—can you hear me now?” “Hey, Verizon, you’re starting to come in loud and clear.” Or so it seems, as USA Today is reporting that discussions are heating up between Apple and Verizon to make the iPhone a possible phone option for the 80 million-plus Verizon users out there. It’s always seemed kind of likely that AT&T couldn’t possibly hog the whole iPhone pie, and apparently talks are in the “high-level” stage even as Steve Jobs…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been excited at the idea of getting Verizon’s FiOS service. The fastest Internet possible at my fingertips, with no real competition. Next month, I’m moving and, for the first time, I’ll be living in a place where FiOS is available. But I’ve got a problem. Now that I have the option, do I really need FiOS? Right Now, Cable is Doing the Job Currently, I have Comcast’s high-speed Cable Internet. I’ve never had a problem with the…

Guys Dominate PC/TV Multitasking
Lisa Montgomery

I pride myself in being the consummate multitasker. I can juggle a phone call and frying pan while emptying the contents of my kids’ school backpacks all while keeping an eye on the dog in the back yard. It’s a skill that most working mothers like me have down to science and don’t mind rubbing our husband’s noses in it. (Guys, maneuvering a riding lawn mower while drinking doesn’t come close to what we girls can do.) According to a survey from In-Stat, however, women…

Cisco Eyes Pure Digital; Networked Video on the Way?
Arlen Schweiger

Known for their home networking solutions, it was a natural migration for Cisco and Linksys to extend into the distributed audio market. Cisco did that at CES this year when it made a splash with the Linksys by Cisco Media Hub and Wireless Home Audio solutions that bridge the networking capabilities with your digital music collections. Now it looks like Cisco could be eyeing video solutions, too. The company announced today that it intends to acquire Pure Digital Technologies, which makes the Flip Video brand…
