You don’t have be spiritual or loving to want a little Unity in your life. We’re talking about On-Q/Legrand‘s Unity Home System. Designed as part of On-Q’s Studio Collection, Unity combines multiroom audio, intercom and camera features into one whole-house system. Built on On-Q’s plug-and-play functionality, the system includes an Integration Module and an LCD Console. The module acts as the “brains” behind the system, with the LCD providing an easy way for any homeowner to access the system. The company says the GUI operates…

Taking the Leap into 802.11n
Toni Kistner

It sounds too good to be true. 802.11n, the next-generation wireless network standard, delivers 100 Mbps or more throughput (true speed, not data rate) with more than twice the range of current 802.11g/a wireless network products. So what’s the catch? No standards, no certified products, limited interoperability, and no guaranteed firmware upgradeability. The 802.11n standard probably won’t be ratified until the fall of 2008, but vendors began releasing “pre-N” and “MIMO-based” products based on initial iterations of the specification more than two years ago. So…

Shout Out for Linear’s New M&S Intercom

The intercom is often overlooked, but it definitely exhumes convenience. After all, it saves you from hunting down house members, reserves lung power and provides no excuse for family hiding at dinner time. Linear wants to get you talking about and into the DMC-10, their M&S brand’s latest entry into the intercom market. Providing hands-free communication, each hub supports up to eight stations, whether that’s a room, patio or door. One system can handle two hubs, for a total of 16 stations. That’s some serious…

What You Need to Know About Intercoms
Gordon van Zuiden

What comes to mind when you think of home intercom systems? How about tinny-sounding speakers that are cut into the wall with clunky buttons for paging? Fortunately, those primitive setups have given way to new and much improved intercoms that work with whole-house audio systems. You can have music throughout the house—and locate and call everyone. Once a whole-house audio system is installed, the infrastructure is also in place to provide a whole-house intercom system—and not one that sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher. Whole-house audio…

A lot goes into designing a good kitchen. There’s the work flow to consider, as well as making sure there’s ample storage space for all your bakeware, dishes and utensils. Having top-quality appliances, cabinetry, lighting and flooring is important, too. And more and more, TVs and stereo systems have become integral to the overall design of a hardworking kitchen. This award-winning kitchen has all of these crucial elements and a whole lot more. Loaded with more electronic components than most media rooms, it demonstrates all…

Some people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on home theater systems, automated lighting control and other electronics throughout their houses. For Mark and Michelle Copeland, though, the cost of a house full of electronics was entirely reasonable. The interior of the couple’s new Colonial in Newton, MA, includes dual home theater systems in the family room, another system downstairs in the kids’ playroom, a plasma-based TV in the bedroom, a couple of smaller flat-panel TVs, a whole house lighting system and an extensive telephone/intercom…

Intercom Rumba Ah ... you remember it well: that obnoxious box on the wall that mysteriously transported your voice from the kitchen to the bedrooms upstairs. Sure, it was a handy way for Mom to call the kids to the dinner table—and fun to fool around with—but oh, what an eyesore. Thanks to sleek, attractive designs from M&S Systems, Nutone, Russound and others, the intercom finally looks like it belongs in today’s modern kitchen. And here’s even more reason to have an intercom installed: Today’s…

Things don’t always work out the way they’re planned. Just ask Norm and Margi Castiglione, the owners of a 5,600-square-foot log home outside Calgary, Alberta. That’s right: Canada. As in brrrrrr! Norm was a homebuilder in the Edmonton area about 300 miles to the north—as in brrrrrr squared—and purchased 155 acres just south of Calgary, thinking his parents would live there. But Norm and Margi ended up staying on the land, and so they decided to build their dream home. Somehow, a 3,100-square-foot layout turned…
