Touchscreens are not just made to just sit on a tabletop. Vantage/Legrand just announced a few new touchscreens, which add plenty of placement options. First is the TPT650, a 6.5-inch in-wall mounted touchscreen. Designed to work with Vantage’s InFusion system, the unit features an Intel X-Scale processor, a Linux operating system, and personalization via simple drag-and-drop programming. It also boasts plenty of media center support, which allows users to access music, photos and more. The TPT1210-1 kicks the existing TPT1210 up a notch. Vantage says… View this story

When it comes to displays, bigger is usually better—that can go for touchpanels, too. After all, bigger screens can mean bigger, easier-to-read and easier-to-navigate menus onscreen. To that end, Elan Home Systems has begun shipping its new VIA!Valet10.0-EM touchpanel to its dealers. The name incorporates the screen size of the display, which at 10.2 diagonal inches gives 60 percent more viewing area than the original VIA!Valet model, Elan says. The controller has all the sleek appeal of a next-gen touchscreen, too, with the color LCD… View this story

Anakin Skywalker is in the dune race of his life. His pod is dipping and twisting and when he’s bumped by a Tusken Raider, so am I. The announcer shouts, “Skywalker is spinning out of control,” and I whirl right along with him in front of a 13-foot screen. A shot ricochets off the pod’s windshield, and the headrest of my chair pops. Anakin steers over rocky terrain and my seat rumbles. Now this is how you go to the movies. Most people pay $10… View this story

Home control systems from Crestron are all about convenience, high functionality and versatility. The company’s new TPS-6X touchpanel combines the whole ball of wax into one nifty device. Crestron says the 6-inch TPS-6X gives you functionality previously found in nine separate touchpanels, and can be used as a wireless, tiltcase and permanent panel. Long-range two-way RF communication can be achieved for managing devices up to 200 feet, and there’s also one-way IR as well with the TPS-6X. When it’s wired, the touchpanel can run on… View this story

Everyone seems to have worked the iPod into their home electronics system, so why not the iPhone? CE Pro has a nifty little story about Steve Moore’s AirRemote application, a low-cost way to tweak the iPhone into a universal remote control. The setup includes the AirRemote software and a box from Global Cache, which can turn the iPhone’s IP commands into signals to operate audio, video, lighting, and more. The AirRemote program is also compatible with the iPod touch. “The beauty of the iPod Touch… View this story

Audio Design Associates is jumping on the touchscreen bandwagon, with its new TS-8611. The unit promises complete audio/video control from one 240 x 320-pixel TFT LCD display. All users have to do is swipe or press corresponding graphic icons. It also has what the company calls “creature comforts”—tone controls, an alarm clock, sleep timer, dimming, and the ability to control other rooms. ADA says that the touchscreen doesn’t need a special enclosure; it should squeeze into a standard single-gang box and connect with one Cat5… View this story
