There are myriad reasons to add a central vacuum system to your home. Benefits include cleaning convenience, improved indoor air quality, durability, reliability, not having to lug an upright vacuum up or down the stairs (for more benefits, also check out MD Manufacturing’s 7 Reasons Why). What you might not know is that many of the same people who work on your home theater projects are just as proficient at installing central vac systems in your home, as many custom electronics pros include the service… View this story

One of the most popular spots to be at the recent CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and IBS (International Builders’ Show) in Las Vegas wasn’t on the show floors, but located in a residential neighborhood about 5 miles away. That was the site of the NextGen National Demonstration Home, built to showcase the latest in digital and green home technologies. The five-bedroom, six-bath, 5,200-square-foot home was built in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to reach a level of energy efficiency 51 percent greater than… View this story

Disney dispatched its cute WALL-E robot to clean up the Earth. Massachusetts- based iRobot just wants to clean up your home. The company manufactures and sells robotics that vacuum and wash your floors, clear your gutters, sweep your workshop and clean your pool. Disney would probably approve of iRobot’s quaint product family names, too: Roomba, Scooba, Looj, Dirt Dog and Verro. But while WALL-E lives in a very fictional future, Roomba, Scooba and company are real and available now—and they’re a glimpse of why personal… View this story

Okay, so central vacuuming isn’t the sexiest topic in the world. Central vacs don’t have big color touchscreens, don’t allow to you access iTunes, and are definitely not supposed to emit thunderous explosions in ear-piercing surround sound. Then again, who doesn’t like the idea of a central vacuum? It’s convenient and doesn’t require lugging a heavy upright or canister bound to hoover up something and break—or spew a toxic cloud all over your family room because … um … you neglected to change its itsy-bitsy… View this story

HP launched its Vroom Solo, which provides “quick-cleanup” for anyone who already has a central vac systems or those who don’t. The company posted a video of the product in action on its Web site and demonstrated the product here at CEDIA Expo 2008. It’s the first major innovation in the central vac industry to come along in quite some time, says HP’s Amy Wesely. In a way, the lack of changes can be a good thing. “Integrators kind of like that because a lot… View this story

The new Vroom from Dirt Devil is the greatest thing to happen to central vacuum systems since the full-bag LED (central vac humor). The compact unit (about the size of a DVD player) can fit in tight spaces, like beneath the kitchen sink, for easy access in minor spillage emergencies. The hose reaches up to 24 feet, and retracts neatly into the base. What’s the big deal? Central vacuum systems are nice, but who wants to lug around a giant hose to the site of… View this story

NuTone has introduced a universal retractable vacuum hose, CHV1, according to the company. The hose, which stores at 11 feet, can extend to 30 feet, making it easier to reach more spaces throughout the house. The hose automatically retracts when done. NuTone says the CHV1 is compatible with any central vacuum system manufacturer.  View this story

We take for granted that our TV, DVD player and other home theater components will work without fail. But while these devices have become increasingly dependable through the years (with some notorious exceptions), there’s no getting around the fact that situations beyond one’s control can reach out and zap them right before your eyes.  So it’s important to do what you can to insure the health of your HT. While there’s not enough space to list all the possible ways to go about doing this,… View this story

Vacuums have come a long way in terms of suction power and versatility. For example, today’s powered vacs are much easier to push across a thick carpet than older models, and most units now come with a wide assortment of hand tools that make it a cinch to clean the dust from ceiling fans, draperies and other hard-to-reach spots. Plus, nothing can compare to the cleaning power, convenience and versatility of a built-in vacuum system. What You’ll Need A central vacuum system can be installed… View this story
