Q. I am looking at purchasing a Samsung PN63B590 for my living room. I’m going plasma because of the size, and my viewing distance is 15-20 feet. Is there a better option that you know of for the same price range? - Steve, Indiana A. Steve, my suggestion, considering your viewing distance, is to go with a two-piece projection system. I searched around and found an Epson Home Cinema 8100 1080p Projector for $1,500. I also found an Elite Screen 100-inch EZ Frame CineGrey Screen… View this story

“Pat warned my kids that if they didn’t turn off their Xbox when they were finished, it would burn out,” says Janet Crown, the owner of a recently renovated 12,000-square-foot home in Los Angeles, Calif.  That’s Pat as in Patrick Calderone, who is the owner of Audio Video Experience (AVX), the custom electronics design and installation firm hired by Crown to rig her place with a variety of family-friendly electronic systems. As the audio/video expert on the two-year project, his advice was taken seriously by… View this story

CES 2010 in Las Vegas was all about 3D. There were 3D Blu-ray players, 3D network announcements from ESPN, Discovery Channel, and DirecTV. And we had a slew of new 3D TVs from Vizio, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, and LG Electronics. Tack on James Cameron’s “Avatar” exploding at the box office and signs point to 2010 being the year 3D home theater arrives. The TV manufacturers haven’t released many details about pricing and availability, but they are promising to deliver 3D TVs at some point… View this story

Who better to vouch for Panasonic‘s commitment to this unstoppable 3D trend than a key player from the blockbuster movie Avatar? That would be producer Jon Landau, who helped bring James Cameron’s story to life—which has already topped the $1 billion mark in less than a month at the box office—and then took he stage as part of Panasonic’s press conference at CES 2010. Landau noted how impressed he already was with Panasonic’s plasma quality. Well the Viera line of plasmas will be taking a… View this story

It all started out so innocently. Those 27-inch flat-panel TVs were plenty for most A/V enthusiasts. But as with anything high-tech, our passion for in-your-face video grew, as did the size of the displays themselves. Today, 42 inchers are the norm, says Jeff Cove, vice president of technology and alliance group, Panasonic Corp. of North America. He expects the consumer demand for increasingly larger displays to only continue. With each new jump in size, plasma and LCD factories must reequip, and in many cases relocate… View this story

If you spend enough time looking, you’re bound to find a good deal on a flat-panel TV. Just ask Bob Footitt Jr., of Moorhead, Minn. He spent months scouring sale flyers and the Internet for a bargain. When he found it at a nearby big-box retailer, he jumped at the chance and bought, not one, but nine generously sized TVs. Prior to purchasing the TVs, Footitt hired Arctic Audio of Fargo, N.D. to design and install a multiscreen video wall in his renovated basement. As… View this story

In the market for a new TV this holiday season? Between the big-box retailers and online etailers, you can probably find yourself a pretty sweet deal. Could be that you’re looking for a Samsung model, and the company has five on discount for this week—began November 22, and running through November 30, 2009. Samsung says the specials will be available at retailers across the country, so you can probably find a usual suspect near where you live. Here are the TV details: Samsung 46” LCD… View this story

One of the easiest ways to Beat Black Friday is to look for package deals. Having a 50” plasma hanging on the wall is great, but seeing is only half the battle. You need a little sound to round out the experience. But if you’re shopping for a 720p plasma around Black Friday, something tells me you don’t have a multi-thousand-dollar budget for audio.  Luckily, Best Buy currently (until midnight Saturday) has a tidy little package consisting of the PN50B450 50” 720p plasma and HT-Z320… View this story

Want to save energy, but still want your HDTV? Today you can have both high-quality high-def viewing and energy savings. If there’s a blue Energy Star logo on the latest TV you’re eyeing, you know it meets stringent power requirements. And you shouldn’t have to worry about performance being compromised. An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) television typically requires much less power than plasma, which has seen makers Pioneer and Vizio drop the technology within the past year. LCDs are becoming more and more efficient, thanks… View this story

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has vowed to pursue legal and legislation solutions to yesterday’s decision by the California Energy Commission (CEC) to impose energy-efficiency requirements on TVs sold in the state. The standards require that new televisions sold in California consume 33 percent less electricity by 2011 and 49 percent less electricity by 2013. The standards affect only those TVs with a screen size 58 inches or smaller. For example, a 42-inch screen would consume 183 watts or less by 2011 and 115 watts… View this story
