If you’re walking by Hitachi’s new UltraThin 50-inch plasma, you may just miss it. This super-skinny TV measures a mere 1.5 inches thick. It’s not the thinnest we’ve ever seen, but it sure is pretty. Aside from a pretty picture, Hitachi didn’t say much else about its latest model. The company also has UltraThin models in 32-, 37-, 42- and 47-inch sizes. Each of those boasts patented ventilation technology and backlight features. A few are currently available, with more coming this month. The prices range… View this story

The Panasonic carousel of management had plenty to share today—they all sort of linked their announcements together like the web of connectivity the company is creating with its Viera link line of products. The “Visual Era”—Viera—as they are calling it. In that respect, Panasonic covered the whole home theater realm during its press conference, starting with its new Blu-ray players, on to an A/V receiver, to the projector, to larger-size plasma TVs. Some highlights: --The DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 Blu-ray players have the full assortment of… View this story

This big boy is large and in charge—of all of your free time, anyway. Panasonic just unveiled another 103-inch plasma to make you feel inferior about your current entertainment setup. Engadget says that the TH-103PZ800 is a beast that can command all of your video needs, via four HDMI jacks, an Ethernet port and an array of other hookups. Tech specs include Deep Color and x.v.Color support, a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, various tuners, and Panasonic’s own VIERA Link technology. It also has an SD card… View this story

The corner of Hollywood and Vine has evoked movie memories for ages, but now the historic Broadway building that once nestled amidst radio and movie-related businesses is better known for having gone all 21st Century. Because its high-profile tenant is Pioneer’s KURO Loft. Okay, so maybe the name “KURO” doesn’t exactly scream Hollywood to the uninitiated, but for those in the know, this is the place where directors, technicians and colorists come to discover how good their video products are going to look when they… View this story

A lot of people have argued about the lifespan of plasmas. Does it really matter? Panasonic says you could be long dead anyway. The company just announced that its 2008 Viera line is rated to last 100,000 viewing hours before it hits half-brightness. That’s about 42 years, based on the U.S. average of six-and-half hours of viewing each day. Do the math—it looks like you’d better add some lucky recipient to your will. The 1080p portion of the Viera line includes the PZ850, the PZ800,… View this story

Maybe you’re media room isn’t big enough to accommodate a whopper of a TV. Maybe you really prefer plasma to LCD and snapped up a 32-incher for your bedroom. Budget flat-panel manufacturer Vizio brought plasma into that 32-inch size category earlier this summer, and consumers are filling their rooms with them, according to Quixel Research. The market research firm says in its USA PDP Market Review that after a down Q1, the plasma display panel (PDP) category bounced back with a 30 percent increase in… View this story

The way we buy TVs is set to change on Nov.1. That’s the day the new Energy Star specs for energy-efficient TVs go into effect. Any TV sold in the United States on Nov. 1 and after and bearing the Energy Star logo must have been tested to be energy efficient in its “on” state, rather than just using less than 1 watt in its standby or “off” state.  Many of today’s LCD TVs will meet the new spec, which is adjusted largely by screen… View this story

At an attractive 4-floor townhouse in the West Village of New York City Wednesday, Samsung launched several new LCD and plasma HDTVs that will become available at retail in the next 30 to 60 days. Continuing its proprietary ToC or Touch of Color bezel design, which gives Samsung’s cabinetry a distinctive look, the new models offer stylish and innovative design features. The new models are divided into Series, and each Series offers a set of features that are carried through all screen sizes within that… View this story

A study by J.D. Power and Associates says that electronics salespeople are more likely to push LCD over plasma. The results, announced today, say that salespeople choose LCD three to one over plasma technology, when shoppers ask about screens 40 inches and larger. More than 30 percent of those salespeople told customers that LCDs last longer, with 37 percent warning of the outdated dangers of “burn in” on plasma TVs. “While we see that salespeople are aggressively pushing shoppers to LCD sets, it is important… View this story

If you’ve shopped for TVs lately, you don’t need me to tell you that thin is in. Those bulky and obscenely-heavy CRT sets of yesteryear are increasingly hard to find and in their place we have an endless parade of slim plasma and LCD flat panels. Short-depth DLP and LCD-based rear-projection televisions (or “microdisplays”) represent an attractive and high-value alternative, but what you gain in savings you lose in floor space since these displays are rarely wall-mountable. Finally there’s the mighty front projector – the… View this story

LG PG61

If you’re looking to really blend that TV into your decor, LG has a unit for you—or will at some point. The PG61 is a “frameless” plasma TV. That means it’s a single layer, resembling a big sheet of black glass. Maybe I am missing something, but the image looks like it has a frame—a black frame. How is that different from a normal TV? Are they just using a stock photo? The PG61 must have a great picture or laser beams or something. Domain-b.com… View this story
