Studying Up

Briefly describe the objectives in creating this theater.
Our client presented us with a spectacular study area overlooking one of the great lakes from the top of a cliff and challenged our team to design a jaw dropping theater space that would maintain the aesthetics and functionality of the study while achieving excellence in audio and video performance. Wanting to maintain the feel of a study area, take advantage of the dramatic views, and design a phenomenal theater that would be simple for the whole family to use we got to work.

What technical features are notable in this project?
Combing a dedicated theater with an existing study was no easy task. The room was long and narrow with a fairly significant change in height. The client also wanted the projector concealed. The only projector with enough throw and shift was the Marantz VP-11S2L which we combined with a 132” 2.35 diagonal Stewart ElectriMask screen along with a Kaleidescape DVD server for the wow factor. We needed some diffusion for the room; the easiest way to create that was with a bookshelf. We also wanted to create a more defined separation between the study and theater so another bookcase was created but this time just half high to give the effect without blocking the beautiful view.
