DIYers Dig It

X10, Z-Wave and Insteon pride themselves in offering automation products that almost anybody can install and program. The X10 Commander app ($10, pictured) facilitates the control of as many as 60 X10 powerline devices, whether you’re at home or on the road. The ZWave Commander app ($15) operates wireless Z-Wave devices such as lights and garage door openers. And for DIY-friendly Insteon products, try free apps like iLinc and Indigo Touch. These home-control apps are written for specific PC-based automation systems (not free). For example, ZWave Commander requires ControlThink software and a ControlThink Z-Wave USB stick.
