Get the Lowdown

Tucking a TV into the ceiling may sound a bit extreme, but depending on the layout and design of the room, it may be the best option. Obviously, there needs to be a good amount of unused space above the ceiling to house the TV (think attic or closet). Exactly how much space depends on the size of the TV, says Lift-Tech president Russ Fawkes.

“Our lifts require 4.75 inches plus the width of the TV, and 4.5 inches plus the height of the TV.”

The weight of the TV is less of a consideration than it used to be, says Fawkes, as most flat-panel TVs under 60 inches now weigh less than 150 pounds. Besides having enough room to accommodate a ceiling lift, you’ll also need a lot of installation help and a fairly large pocketbook.

Price: Starts at $10,000
