Dave Matthews Band, Under the Table and Dreaming

After debuting with a self-released live album, Dave Matthews Band hit it big time with Under the Table and Dreaming and hasn’t looked back over the last 15 years. Virtually all of Dave’s studio efforts, and much of the live album releases, are very well engineered to take full advantage of the musicianship that exists here.

The opening drum stamps of Carter Beauford on “The Best of What’s Around” are a big statement on what’s to come, and his playing especially, along with violinist Boyd Tinsley and late saxophonist LeRoi Moore are worth checking out DMB’s tunes even if you can’t stand Dave’s vocals (if you do like his style, all the better). Focusing on their riffs for songs like “Ants Marching,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Typical Situation” can make for hair-raising demo experiences.

Signature Test Track: “Ants Marching” Get it on the aforementioned Remember Two Things live release if you can find it, but even here, again featuring Beauford’s drumming to start, the track highlights the group’s talented weaving of different instrument stylings. It’s a track almost anyone can tap their feet to, and at the same time you can point out the quality level of recording and mixing.
