The guitar god got really into stereo effects on this one, as you’ll hear the dizzying sounds whirring from left to right in your system. Are You Experienced? and Electric Ladyland may contain more radio hits on the whole, but Axis may uncover more of Jimi’s soul.
Sting and Monte Montgomery are among those to make beautiful covers of “Little Wing,” but the simple yet powerful original is a jewel on this album. Then go crank up “Spanish Castle Magic” for psychedelic madness or “If 6 Was 9” for more guitar with attitude.
Signature Test Track: “Bold as Love” The album-ending crescendo on the title track is worth the price of admission alone. The rest of the song seems like a perfectly lovely ballad with gentle singing and guitar plucking, but boy does it get going on the “reprise” section after you think the song has ended. One of the great album closers of all time.
