Led Zeppelin, IV (Zoso or Symbols)

It might be cliche to include one of the most popular albums, along with the most popular rock song of all time, on a list of rockin’ demo albums but when was the last time you really listened critically to “Stairway”?

The track has it all, from soft acoustic guitar to screaming vocals; a nice synthesis of the album as a whole, where you can test your system’s ability to handle quieter tunes like “Going to California” or heart-stopping Bonham-infused doozies like the aptly named “Rock and Roll.” Sure, sound quality takes a bit of a toll on the harder parts of “When the Levee Breaks,” but that bluesy rock comes across loud and clear. Don’t be afraid to engage in more repeat playings of “Four Sticks,” maybe the least known track but one of the more interestingly composed pieces on IV.

Signature Test Track: “Stairway to Heaven” See the above reasons. Take notice of how well your system does quiet—it’ll be especially telling if you’re spinning the song on vinyl—and then start layering in Robert Plant’s harrowing vocals and other instruments on top of the initial acoustic guitar. Even after thousands of times hearing this song it can still carry effective emotional impact, especially if you’re hearing it on an audiophile-grade system.
