The longest-running Billboard hit album of all time, you’ve probably listened to this one in just about every format from vinyl to eight-track to cassette to CD to SACD. And probably many times with your headphones on, so whether you thought about it or not you were getting a good dose of its audiophile qualities.
As always, the harmonic blending of vocals by David Gilmour and Richard Wright are beautiful to listen to, as are more surprising additions like breathy saxophone (“Us and Them”) and wailing, emotional female vocals (“Great Gig in the Sky”). There are little voices, heartbeats and other goodies all over the album so it pays to truly listen closely as you would for an audio demo.
Signature Test Track: “Time” Super high-end theater company Goldmund likes to demo the SACD multichannel version of Dark Side, and it’s easy to see why when you have a song like “Time” and all its bells and chimes buzzing all around you, followed by hammer notes and then the soaring vocals and guitarwork.
