As the former/current guitarist for the metal band Testament, as well as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Alex Skolnick could be considered a musical chameleon. Early in his career the virtuoso guitarist was inspired by the drive of one of his guitar heroes, Randy Rhoads and a Miles Davis concert to learn the art of jazz music.
After earning a degree in jazz music from New School University in New York, Skolnick released his first jazz album, “Goodbye to Romance: Standards for a New Generation.” This high-energy album is well recorded with super dynamics and it merges hard rock with jazz. For fans of rock music the songs look familiar; “Detroit Rock City,” “Goodbye to Romance,” “No One Like You” and “Pinball Wizard.” What you’ll hear however are new arrangements that take the song’s harmonies into the world of jazz.
Signature Test Track: “Pinball Wizard” There are plenty of songs on this record that people will know, but for someone looking for the excitement of rock and the musicianship of jazz music this song has it all.
