U2 ‘Rattle and Hum’
Paramount, 98 minutes, 1.85:1
Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1
You don’t get a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack with this one, and it’s ‘documentary’ portion has been widely criticized. My take? We didn’t have a grown-up U2 20 years ago, and the band’s commentary would be much different if filmed today. What we do get is a ton of fantastic music, and more concert footage, from what amounted to an underrated and rockin’ post-Joshua Tree album. Poignant efforts like I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For backed by the Harlem choir to blistering Bullet the Blue Sky show the band’s range.
