Sports is always better in high-definition, and 2008 produced some events and images that truly stood out.

Basketball can be hit or miss in high-def—courts can reflect the light with vicious glare, and some are poorly lit and just don’t translate well on TV. But the close-up shots are intense, with every forehead vain, every bead of sweat and every tattoo coming across loud and clear. The Celtics-Lakers series was about as hyped up an NBA Finals as it gets, and even though Game 6 was a laugher, the series on the whole featured all-time greats like KG, Pierce and Kobe (and a satisfying result for Celtics fans). ABC’s video offered some appealing camera angles, and it didn’t hurt to have A-list celebs in the audience. And no, I didn’t select this one because I’m from Massachusetts—I’m actually a Lakers fan.
