Nest Thermostat

At some point, you were probably told not to touch the thermostat. This smart option applies that rule to the entire house, via a set-it-and-forget-it approach. After an initial period, the Nest can actually learn how the family likes to keep the house, as well as the best times for heating and cooling. Promising to work in 95 percent of homes with low-voltage systems, the Nest features Auto Away and System Match features. Dad will also appreciate the monthly reports the Nest will send via email. However, the real hook is that this thermostat has a web component, so Dad can tweak from almost any web-enabled device—or you can do it for him when he’s least expecting it.

MSRP: Starts at $249
