Energy Management

Pedigo says we’ve seen the hype of energy management fade in the last year, but that “trough of disillusionment” is a natural occurrence right before an explosion in the technology’s availability. That should be evidenced by the number of energy management products and services talked up at the recent CES.

“I think were getting really close to energy management being a standard offering,” Pedigo says. He says custom electronics (CE) pros will be able to tell their clients specifically what they will save, what the cost is, and give them long-term energy budgeting plans.

The so-called smart grid will go a long way toward making this a reality. According to the ZigBee Alliance, 15 million smart meters that allow two-way communication between homes and electric utilities have been installed, and 40 million more are on the way. Homes will need systems to take the data collected off of that smart meter and be smart enough to turn devices on or off at the most economical and convenient times.

And by the way, a Stanford study indicates that the energy efficiency of computers doubles about every 18 months.
