Shure SRH550DJ

Shure is known for making pro audio gear like microphones, but broke into the earphone market at the turn of the Millennium. The SRH550DJ is an over-the-ear, or circumaural, DJ model with nice, large 50mm drivers for enjoyable bass response, a fairly comfortable headset and ear cups that swivel so you can free up an ear without removing the phones completely—just like a real DJ. I listened to these earphones while proofreading Electronic House pages in the afternoons, and they were a joy, especially for headphones that cost only $100. With punchy, crisp bass, the SRH550DJ’s found sounds in both my compressed and uncompressed music that I either had never heard or hadn’t heard in quite a while. The set comes with a gold-plated adapter jack for receivers and such, but you can use these with computers, mobile devices, whatever. I found the headset a tad uncomfortable after a few hours, but I have a pointy head. One test for the Shure was the Pretender’s driving bass line of “Mystery Achievement,” which it handled with ease. Just wish I could exercise with these.
