Sennheiser CXC 700

These in-ear phones have noise cancellation technology, which works by creating opposite sound waves that cancel out offending noise from aircraft and other large, droning engines. Even better, there are three settings for different levels of noise cancellation you might require, from subway stations to airplanes to general noise, from about 100 to 3,000 Hz. I haven’t yet had a chance to travel with these, but it’s been leaf blower season in my parts, so when the neighbors fired up their blowers, I fired up the CXC 700. It cancelled out some of the offending noise—but not the higher-pitched whine. And once I put on music with the noise cancellation—not even loudly—I forgot all about those pesky machines.  You can even customize the noise cancellation settings to some degree, and a TalkThrough function allows you to mute the audio input and talk with others without removing the earpieces. I can see these as great little earphones to travel with, and they come with a wallet-size case. The owner’s manual takes up the most room, though you’ll need it to master operation. $320.
