Polk UltraFit 3000

The UltraFit 3000 is designed for noise isolation while working out, with several sized in-ear plugs and a wrap-around frame to keep the earphones in place. The earphones come with three wires of different lengths, the longest of which has in-line control for iDevices and a built-in microphone for taking calls. It worked well with controlling volume and selections on my iPhone 3GS but not on my older and much lighter iPod nano, which I prefer to run with. On several jogs the earphones stayed nicely in place and provided clear high and midrange sounds. Bass is not a forte of these, but find me in-ear phones that can do bass well. Regardless, they were an upgrade over the iBuds that came with the iPhone and nano, and they made my run/jog/slog a lot more bearable. I also wore them while jumping rope for several spirited half-hour sessions, and the higher impact activity had no ill effects. U2’s Greatest Hits were clear and vibrant, with the Edge’s slashing guitar work, and my workouts sailed by. My only hangup was that the long wire with the in-line controls had to be put inside a shirt or warm-up jacket so it wouldn’t bounce around annoyingly. $100
