Polk UltraFit 2000

The UltraFit 2000 is the on-ear version of Polk’s lineup. The phones fit over your ears have a support piece that fits behind your ear to hold them in place, while the headset rests in back. When I first put them on I thought there was no way these things would stay on for a good run, but they did and were stable—all the while keeping my ears toasty. The set comes with three different pads: foam, silicon for a moisture barrier and shearling for extra warmth in the cold. There’d be no excuses for not running now. Changing the pads can be a bit tricky, but that is soon mastered. A few brisk runs with these showed a more expansive sound than the in-ear model, which is to be expected considering the large size of the drivers, and with somewhat better bass. The best thing about them: They made my runs during a stressful week far more enjoyable than expected. Even slow, expansive music like Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Trespassers William’s Different Stars made for nice, mellow workouts with some pretty good times. A lot of the quirky sounds and reverb in both these albums, which are no doubt used to accompany more illicit forms of dopamine enhancement, came through clearly. There is an on-ear three-button control and inline mic. $70
