Yes, you will believe an elephant can fly. Celebrating the animated classic’s 70th birthday, Disney brings the adorable flying Dumbo to Blu-ray Disc in deluxe Diamond Edition fashion. It had been a long time since I last looked at Dumbo - I dare say it may have been on VHS - but this newly restored high def print is a wonder to behold. Like Disney’s other recent restorations, colors take on new life, visible print damage is greatly reduced, and the impressive new 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio is a welcome addition. A restored original mono soundtrack is thankfully included as well.
Extras on this Diamond Edition favor quality over quantity, and that’s just fine with me. Welcome is another edition of “Disney View” where the black pillarbox bars flanking the 4:3 presentation are replaced with newly-painted artwork driven by the film’s color palette. But the real highlight is an excellent picture-in-picture viewing mode which Disney calls “Cine-Explore,” hosted by Pixar’s Pete Docter and Disney’s Paula Sigman and Andreas Deja. Together they step through Dumbo’s place in Disney’s distinguished history and talk about every element of the film’s production. Animation fans won’t want to miss this.
Highly recommended.
