With the kids back in school, the fall TV season is now in full swing. If you’re saving new episodes on your DVR, but hoping to catch up on what you missed, here are six great TV releases now on DVD and Blu-ray:
Castle, Season 3 - A fun and entertaining series, “Castle” had a strong Season Three capped off with a spectacular cliffhanger. The show looks great on ABC HD, so it’s unfortunate that Disney continues to release these season sets on DVD only. Still, the discs look and sound quite good on disc and fans get a mix of extras including an amusing segment called “Castle Goes Hollywood” - a fine chaser for episode 22: “To Love and Die in L.A.”
Hawaii 5-0, Season 1 - The Blu-ray edition of this reboot’s debut season is a Best Buy exclusive, but the DVD can be found everywhere. You really should go to Best Buy though. Despite a few dopey episodes along the way and some truly shameless product placement by Chevy and Microsoft, the real highlight of the new 5-0 is the gorgeous Hawaiian geography - and the island state looks truly spectacular in 1080p.
How I Met Your Mother, Season 6 - I guess those Blu-ray sets weren’t selling well enough, because Fox has decided to release Season Six of the very funny “HIMYM” on DVD only. Extras include deleted scenes, select episode commentaries, the obligatory gag reel, and more.
Hung, Season 2 - HBO continues their streak of doing no wrong with Hung, another surprisingly great original series. Season Two extras include a look behind the scenes, deleted scenes, and select episode commentaries featuring the series’ producers and writing team.
The Kennedys - It’s always hard to discern what’s true and what’s not when filmmakers take on well-known public figures. That was the case with David Fincher’s Social Network, and it’s also the case with this Reelz Channel mini-series chronicling the life and times of the titular family. However, one thing is for certain - it does make for good television. Great performances and an impressive technical presentation highlight this recommended Blu-ray Disc edition from the folks at New Video.
Modern Family, Season 2 - If you watched The Emmy’s, you know that “Modern Family” is not only funny, but well-acted as well. Julie Bowen, Sophia Vergara, and company make this series one of the best comedy slots in prime time and Fox does right by the show with an excellent Blu-ray edition of its sophomore season. Extras include deleted scenes, a table read, a look at Mitch’s flash mob, and more.
