BRIDESMAIDS

I really wanted to love this “HANGOVER for girls,” the film so many people called “the funniest movie of the year.” And while I will admit that there are good number of painful belly laughs to be had here - including one downright disgusting but hilarious dress fitting - I was left feeling rather disappointed in some of the decisions made by the filmmakers. The big problem: they just go too far, obviously trying so hard to shock and push the boundaries, that it distracts from an otherwise funny and sweet story that would be much stronger with more disciplined editing. When my wife says, “Are you sure this isn’t the unrated cut?” that should tell you all you need to know if you’re considering watching this one with your mom.

Universal’s Blu-ray looks and sounds great and it’s loaded with amusing extras. The movie made a killing at the box office, so I’m sure many of you will have picked this one up already. My only hope for the inevitable sequel is that they turn up the funny and turn down the crude for crudeness’ sake.
