Portable Generators

A portable gasoline-powered generator can keep some things in your house running. Have an electrician tie it into your electrical service panel, and you can power a boiler or furnace, most of your lights, some electronics and a well pump. Many produce 2,000 to 6,000 watts of power. But don’t count on running an electric oven or central air conditioning. According to Consumer Reports, Figure on $500 to $1,000 for generators and at least $500 for a power-transfer switch to power your hardwired circuits. Never use portable generators inside a house or garage. They must be run outside due to the exhaust. Available at hardware stores.
