Fuel Cells and Alternatives

Portable Solar Power generators are available, though they likely won’t power too much in your home.

Fuel cells that convert natural gas, methane, hydrogen or other fuels into electricity or should be an option in the future, but for now they are hard to get and prohibitively expensive. Panasonic has been selling fuel cells in Japan, and Bloom Energy hopes to offer fuel cells for households. Bloom boxes help power Google and eBay facilities but are as big as parking spaces and cost $700,000. We expect the technology to get much better and more available very quickly. Even look for some to run on garbage.

In the future, batteries from electric vehicles may be used to power devices around our homes.
