BG Radia FS-420

The FS-420 is a new floor standing speaker from BG Radia that represents a significant step forward in loudspeaker design. The innovative concept of FS-420 delivers top of the line performance inherent for dipole speakers in a life style design package that attracts a wide range of audio enthusiasts. The FS-420 is a three-way loudspeaker with two 6.5” high output woofers installed in a sealed enclosure at the bottom and planar ribbon driver section. This slim tower is made out of extruded aluminum and is integral to the woofer enclosure. The speaker has a high gloss black acrylic base and top cap with a ¼” steel support plate where 4 metal conical spikes reside. The woofer cabinet has a scratch resistant black textured finish. The elegant extruded aluminum tower and steel feet are finished in automotive grade high gloss paint with black being the standard finish where custom colours are available by special order. The planar ribbon driver array features an MTM arrangement as dipoles, radiating sound from the front and back. The very low, 1.5 kHz crossover point between two Neo10 midrange panels which flank the Neo3 tweeter, preserves wide and consistent directivity in vertical and horizontal planes. Due to the high sensitivity and high power handling of Neo10 midrange panels, the crossover point between the woofers and planar ribbon array is relatively low at 250Hz allowing most of the instrumental and vocal spectrum to be reproduced by the dipole array and making the integration of ribbons with the woofers seamless and sonically coherent. The systems low frequency extension is at 70Hz (- 6dB), therefore a high resolution subwoofer should be used to augment deeper bass.

Features

Dipole loudspeakers using thin film drivers (planar ribbon or electrostatic) have been known for superior sound quality in comparison with traditional box designs. The thin film drivers have advantages over traditional drivers in sound reproduction especially in mid and high frequency bands. Another important advantage of such dipole loudspeaker is the absence of an enclosure that creates parasitic back wave bounce and box resonance that negatively affects sound quality. A speaker cabinet, especially larger designs, creates its own sound, masking original signals, thus reducing transparency and resolution. Box speaker manufacturers make every effort to diminish these effects by using elaborate cabinet construction and other techniques. The FS-420's planar ribbon drivers do not have a cabinet, thus eliminating those problems altogether. The FS-420 represents the next step in thin film dipole loudspeaker design. All thin film dipole loudspeakers have had compromises. To insure exceptional sound quality, there is no shortcut to having high dynamic range capabilities and consistent wide dispersion. Most former designs use large size panels in order to achieve high SPL output. This results in poor, irregular and narrow directivity patterns. Remedies that are used, while somewhat effective, have not eliminated those problems. Most such speakers have very narrow stereo effects or lack HF or LF extension. Other designs are physically large and unacceptable to the consumer. The FS-420 planar ribbon drivers provide both, high output and wide consistent dispersion. Both Neo3 tweeter and Neo10 midrange use high energy Neodymium motor systems with fully symmetric push-pull motor drive. They are covered by two BG Radia US patents that address the above issues. This and the innovative dipole tower design with MTM driver arrangement result in a speaker that is slim, exquisitely attractive, yet has higher sensitivity and output capabilities than most speakers the same size.
