While USB connectivity is amazingly ubiquitous in consumer electronics, cabling for niche applications is still hard to come by. Knowing this, L-com introduced its armored USB cables in August to join its growing line of hard-to-find USB products. These cables, which come in either USB Type A male to Type B male, and Type A male to Type A male, are designed to withstand crushing forces up to 1500 pounds per square inch (PSI) using a stainless steel “armor” around the length of the cable. Initially, applications for this kind of product are more in the industrial, military, and aerospace market, but L-com decided to manufacture and stock these cables in seven different lengths in order to serve installers and integrators for connecting devices like digital storage. Applications for this kind of product include wiring in high-traffic areas where the cable may be stepped on or run over such as a busy trade fair, wiring of movable equipment that may crush the cable up against a solid object like a wall, and temporary wiring in hazardous environments like an active construction scene. Along with the armored feature, these cables use 30 micro-inch gold plated contacts and thicker, 20 AWG power conductors, meaning these cables will outlast and outperform cheaper alternatives, saving busy installers from having to buy and frequently replace USB cables that get ruined in these kinds of applications. In a world where USB is becoming the choice connectivity method of nearly any consumer electronics, L-com’s off-the-shelf availability of specialty cables like these is a great help to electronics installers.
