I read your article on “Tips on Using a UPS Battery Backup in a Home
Theater,” but I’m still a little confused. I’m setting up my Home Theater
with the following powered AV components:
Epson 8350 projector
Onkyo TX-NR709 Receiver
Playstation 3
Panasonic DVD-F87S 5 Disc DVD Player
Magnavox VHS (yes I still have some of these)
Definitive PF15TL subwoofer
NETGEAR GS105 switch

Which components would recommend should be on a UPS; which would you put on a power
conditioner and which on a surge suppressor only. Do you have any
recommendations of products that would work for me?

That sounds like a very nice system. My recommendation for using UPS backup would be on components that utilize microprocessors and devices like the projector that have bulbs that need to cool down.

In your system I would put the projector on the UPS (to protect the bulb from blowing), as well as your cable box, PS3 and if you have the room think about the switch and A/V receiver.

The rest of the system can be protected with standard power conditioning/surge protection.
