I had a Sony Surround sound receiver that I hooked up to a speaker selector to add two rooms to ( outside speakers and dining room). Unfortunately when the electrician brought in wires for add’l outside speaks there must have been a wire that touch something as there was a spark and the receivers protection light went on and it is dead. Want to replace the receiver, it is only for my family room surround and 2 other locations. I want to be able to hook up my ipod to it and don’t want to send a ridiculous amount of money. Any suggestions? A friend recommended Sonos system. I am hardwired for these areas already. Also need two decent outside landscape speakers if you could recommend.

If you are using the receiver for surround sound in the family room in addition to the other zone, I would use the Onkyo TSX-609.  It has a powered zone2, you can get an Onkyo iPod dock that integrates nicely, and has internet connectivity for additional music sources like Pandora.  You get alot of bang for your buck.  The Sonos is great too but you wouldn’t have surround sound and you would need an external amp to run multiple pairs of speakers.  I would use the non-powered ZP90.  Each setup would be around $600 retail.
