Ray sent in this question:

I have static coming through speakers. I have outside room, covered roof but
open wall. I have a receiver hooked to a set of AM-5 Bose speakers that
stays out there all the time. I connect my computer to receiver, via a Y
cable, when we want to listen to music. I have eliminated possibility of it
being the receiver, as I swapped with another one and same sound; I bought
new Y cable, same sound; I plugged in iPod vs. computer, same sound; I
unplugged receiver from extension cord and plugged direct into wall, same
sound.

Hi Ray,
The noise could be from a number of different things. It sounds like you’ve already done some good work eliminating a number of choices. One possibility is interference on the speaker wires from another source. Do your speaker wires come in close contact to any other wires, especially power wires for the room lights (maybe even buried in the walls) or other components?

Since it’s an outside room, could the wires or speakers have been exposed to the elements—rain, maybe even a little moisture. Even speakers designed for outdoor use can be affected by moisture. If they were outside through a harsh winter, moisture, ice and thawing/expansion could have damaged something. Is your home by the sea? Sea air is particularly damaging to electronics.

You wrote that the system is hooked up to your computer. Try turning down the computer’s volume. Also check that the sound card is properly installed and re-install or update the driver.

hmmm, it could be the cables… or even the power cable… keep playing with the speakers, if the static is very small… and is inaudible during loudplayback, i dont think it is nessecary to sort it out…. yet.

Many manufacturers make drop down screens and there’s even a product from a company called Elite Screens (Kestrel and Raptor Series of products) that offers a retrofittable screen that “pops up” from the floor
