Wanting to build a room from scratch for a dedicated home theater ideal for 110-130” screen. How many square feet should I consider?
Bob Archer responds:
Hi Craig ideally a media room/home theater should be in a room that has a rectangular shape (this is due to room acoustics). Given the screen size you are considering I would say the minimum throw distance your projector should be is approximately 15 feet. With that as a base guideline you should consider room shapes such as 18x24, 18x30 or something similar to these specs.
You should also plan for the seating location to ensure a good viewing experience and a place for the projector. Beyond that look at other factors such as the ability to control the room’s ambient light and consider how the room will be used for activities—-if any—-beyond movies.
One final consideration: don’t short change the audio portion of the system. Audio is half of the home theater experience and a system that has too much emphasis on video won’t have the full impact of a well designed, great A/V system.
