and the HA systems they have installed.

Can we get something for the folks that dont have 5000+ to drop on a HA system?

Maybe a start here type guide etc?

I am waiting to hear back on my first house purchase, and would really like to see something about starting out with HA and maybe a comparison between the different systems in terms of flexibility, budget, etc.

Yes, I am sure everyone would love to hear about the newest 10 million dollar HA/HVAC/Entertainment system to drool over, but some of us would like to also know what the folks who dont light the pilot light with 50s do.

A comparison between the different home automation systems would be a great article. And certainly you’re not the only reader who would be interested in that article. I’ll pass your idea along to our editorial team.

Also, have a look at our DIY section. Maybe there’s something there you’ll find useful

Adragontattoo

Here is your 5K automation system

Control 4 HC300 Controller $699
Control4 Remote $199
10 Control 4 Light switches $1290
Control4 T-stat $249

Zigbee protocol, so you don’t need cabling.  It is a wireless mesh network.  Control4 gives an On Screen Display that is controlled with the remote.

Here is our general rule.  Labor cost equals hardware cost.  So $2500 worth of gear above, plus $2500 worth of install and programming equals control of HVAC, up to 10 light loads, and AV.

See http://www.control4.com/

Yes, I too would be interested in a more moderate or even a budget system upgrade/installation/theater system that shows how people can accomplish remarkable things without spending a huge amount of cash.

Let’s say that an article series can include any theater or audio system upgrade (inclusively) for less than $5,000.  That would send a message to the reader that you don’t need to be rich to have a system that contains both performance and a sense of satisfaction that you’ve created a robust system that puts a smile on your face.

I believe that there is a human element that is often missing from these stories.  The rich can always do what they want to create a masterpiece of work that you’re affraid to touch…[smack].

Let’s show readers how they can accomplish more reasonable goals with less money but still doing the job right.  Design concepts should be investigated whereby entrepreneurs can build, upgrade, modify, or just have a little fun with existing systems to generate some happiness…is that too much to ask?

Adragontattoo, I agree and support your plight!

I actually have an entry-level automation feature planned soon for the web site, so stay tuned. Also in the next print issue will be a feature on home theater gear for several budgets, so that might answer your “what can I get for this $$$” question. We tend to focus on the luxury installations because those do an excellent job of demonstrating what automation can be at its best, but a “Baby Steps” article is something I’ll be visiting.

Administrator, so am I to understand that the primary focus of the magazine is automation systems?  I had a much brauder perspective in mind.  My bad, I guess.  I wish you all good luck and fortunes in your futures.  I need to search for another source to satisfy my craving for knowledge…but in the home theater spectrum.  Have a super holiday!

Brian, No, not at all, but home automation is one of the major areas we cover. Our focus is on high-performance home theater, audio, and control—and that includes automation, security, lighting and energy management. It’s all under the same roof. However, home theater related subjects tend to take up more of our space than anything else. Search through our content and you’ll see what I mean. If there’s something in particular you’re looking for, I can direct you to the right articles.

Well, my primary interest is in the creation of a home theater without speing a fortune.  I’m starting with an existing room that will require constructive modifications.  My equipment is rather old but still healthy.  I’m afraid the caps in the power amplifiers will eventually fail, so I thought I’d take advantage of the situation and upgrade to a 7.1 setup.  I’m a big fan of Adcom products and I’ve been eyeing a GTP-870HD pre-amp.

I focus on capabilities that create smiles but on a more affordable budget.  In stead of using a projection system, I’m considering a 60” 3D LED option instead.  My room is only 20x22, so I need to be cognizent of spacial dynamics too.  Wiring techniques, products, and fundamentals is always on my mind as well.

As you can see, I have a plethora of interests that all center toward an end goal of creating a nice but moderate home theater.  It’s just one item that’s been on my “bucket list” for quite some time.  Perhaps I’ll stick around a while longer…

Thanks for your speedy reply.
