Sony officially launched its new 4K TVs this week, which sport advanced features such a high-dynamic range, powerful video processing and a new smart TV platform. The new products feature the company’s latest industrial designs and are powered by its 4K Processor X1 that is said to deliver bright and vivid images that are more clearly defined than previous generations.
“Sony has always been the leader in 4K and our exclusive Sony technologies have been at the core of providing TV lovers with the best picture quality, no matter what content they are watching. Our decade of experience allows us to now improve color accuracy and clarity even better than before,” says Taka Fujita, vice president of home entertainment and sound, Sony Electronics. “And now, by pairing our unrivaled picture quality with Android TV, we are setting out to provide our customers with the best user experience possible.”
The televisions also incorporate Sony’s X-Reality Pro Picture Engine, which it says is the culmination of 10 years of upscaling technology experience, and its TRILUMINOS technology that is included in products from the X850C and up. Sony explains its TRILUMINOS technology provides a wide color range and dynamic color correction to ensure consistent, accurate colors.

A key feature on its high-performance X930C and X940C series products is the inclusion of: High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatibility, which Sony says will be available as a download update this summer. HDR content offers more colors and higher contrast levels than traditional content, and Sony points out that Amazon and Netflix will start offering HDR content later this year. Other features of the new 4K TVs include the Android TV platform that integrates the popular smart device OS into Sony’s TV products.
With this technology users can access smart TV content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, PBS, PBS Kids, as well as popular apps such as EPIX, YuppTV, iHeartRadio, Madefire, PlutoTV and Vevo. The included GoogleCast technology supports the wireless streaming from smart devices and computers to the televisions, to allow people to watch content from their iOS devices, including HBO Go, as well as their Macs and Android products.
The X830C, X850C and the X930C/X940C series are available for pre-order for shipment this May, and the X900C/X910C will be available this summer. These products join the company’s VPL-VW350ES 4K projector to provide dealers with a choice of solutions to meet the growing 4K video demand. MSRPs for the new 4K televisions range from $1,300 to $8,000. The new 2K HDTVs, the R510C, W800C and W850C series will be available this summer at MSRPs that range from $480 to $3,000.
