LG Electronics has been talking up all of the awesomeness of its webOS 2.0 smart TV platform for a while now. However, the company hasn’t forgotten about the customers who were willing to commit to the smart TV platform when it was in its infancy. In fact, they are planning to give webOS 1.0 smart TV owners a free upgrade.
If you have a webOS 1.0 smart TV, you will get a free Value Pack Upgrade. This software pack will add the four main components of the webOS 2.0 platform to webOS 1.0 smart TVs.
The My Channels feature can put favorite channels into the Launcher Bar for easy access. Quick Settings allows for webOS adjustments, all without interrupting the program in progress. The Input Picker can automatically detect what devices are being used. And finally, Live Menu delivers a better UI (User Interface) experience, including easier search and overall navigation.
The latest service also boasts a better layout and more shortcuts, as well as quicker boot-up times and a faster response for when you’re flipping between apps.
“LG is dedicated to providing the best user experience for the life of our smart TVs,” said Lee In-kyu, senior vice president and head of the TV and Monitor Division at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “A free upgrade of this scale is unprecedented in the smart TV industry and we’re proud to be setting a new standard for smart TV ownership.”
LG plans to start rolling out the webOS upgrade on September 21. If you have the automatic update option enabled on your TV, you should be all set. If not, look for a pop-up message, which will guide you through the easy upgrade process.
Make sure to keep an eye on that, because this is an update you’re definitely going to want. LG also just announced plans to add new webOS smart TV partners, including iHeartRadio and Rdio. The company has also started streaming full HD and 4K content from DIRECTV to the service’s subscribers, without the need for extra boxes. DIRECTV access is available now through the webOS 2.0 platform, with the music services to follow sometime this month.

But they have forgotten the Smart BD player early adopters. We haven’t seen a plausible update in years.
