Back in March, we were talking up Fantem’s Oomi DIY home automation system. At that time, we didn’t know when the system would be available for purchase. Now, we have purchase info, updates and everything else you’d want to know about this unique home automation solution.
Oomi is a complete smart home system, with a focus on security, home theater, and “ambiance.” The Oomi Cube is the hub of the system, packing in Z-Wave support and an IP camera with night vision, motion and audio. When first announced, the system also included options for the Oomi Plug smart outlet and the Oomi Touch, a tablet that’s designed for setup and control of the system. Of course, if you prefer the app experience, the company has those for iOS and Android devices.
Just before Fantem launched the Oomi Indiegogo campaign (which is now live), the company made a few updates. First of all, the Oomi Touch got a few tweaks, including edge-to-edge glass, with tactile buttons and capacitive touch controls. The company also added the Oomi Multisensor, which detects motion, temperature, light, humidity, and more.
The Oomi has patent pending Tap-and-Touch technology for a pain-free setup. Also, while many DIY home automation systems rely on the web, the Oomi does not. Well, that option is certainly part of the day-to-day process, but one nice perk is that you won’t have to worry about losing control (in more ways than one) if your web connection goes down—it will still work!
Fantem is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to collect pre-orders for the Oomi. Three DIY home automation bundles will be available, each of which includes the Oomi Cube and Oomi Touch. If you want to pledge $279, you can add in the Oomi Multisensor, the Oomi Plug, or the Oomi Bulb. A pledge of $439 will get you all three accessories and a choice between the Oomi Streamer (HD) or the Oomi Air monitoring system. And finally, a pledge of $699 will get you both the Oomi Streamer and the Oomi Air, as well as a choice of nine Z-Wave accessories. Pick your poison and pledge before the campaign ends on June 18. The company will then start shipping products to backers in the beginning of October 2015.
