Haier Uses the Force (and an HD Projector) for Star Wars Refrigerator

Modeled after R2-D2, this remote controllable refrigerator is a must-have for any Star Wars fan.

Haier Star Wars R2-D2 refrigerator

Help me, Haier; you’re my only hope— for my very own R2-D2 refrigerator, anyway. The company that’s known for consumer electronics and appliances is planning to show up to CES 2016 next week with a Star Wars-themed refrigerator.

However, the appearance of this little guy isn’t the coolest thing about it. It’s that the R2-D2 Moving Refrigerator is, well… cool. It can actually chill up to six of your favorite canned beverages.

It even comes with a remote control, which uses two AAA batteries to guide this Star Wars-themed appliance around the room. As it moves about, the 1/1 scale refrigerator can deliver the next best thing to having an actual droid. That’s because it has all of the same lights and sound effects that the on-screen R2-D2 has, allowing you to bring the magic of the Star Wars movies into your home.

While you are guiding everyone’s favorite droid to distribute drinks, it can also entertain via the built-in 720p home theater projector. While only the biggest Star Wars fans will want to huddle around this little guy for a little entertainment, know that the projector also boasts an 80,000:1 contrast ratio, 32 lumens of brightness, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It even supports Miracast for Android (sorry, iOS devices).

Developed and produced by Haier Asia in Japan, the droid measures about 25.6-by-24.4-by-37.4 inches. Also worth mentioning is that the internal battery will get you about two hours of movement on a full charge.

There’s no word on when Haier will start selling the R2-D2 Moving Refrigerator in the U.S., but it was recently up for pre-order in Japan for about $8,000. Of course, it’s not just the price tag that makes this an exclusive; each one is made-to-order and comes with its own serial number.
