Yamaha Makes BD-S677 3D Blu-ray Player All About Sharing

The new player includes several streaming options, thanks to Wi-Fi and Miracast features.

These days, the typical home theater Blu-ray player doesn’t just play discs. A newer Blu-ray player is like a multimedia machine with features for streaming movies, music and more.

Yamaha is looking to multitask in your home theater, using the BD-S677. This newly announced Blu-ray player has everything you could imagine — from a Blu-ray player, anyway. It has support for 3D Blu-ray, DVD and SACD, but also has several streaming features, including ones that will allow you to share content throughout the home.

Miracast is the real perk here. This allows you to stream content wirelessly from Miracast-compatible smartphones and tablets directly to the Blu-ray player. That means you can surf for photos, music, movies, and much more on your phone and put it up on the big screen, without having to be wired. (It’s also easy, which is a nice bonus.)

The BD-S677 also has built-in Wi-Fi, which makes that connection easy. It also makes it easy to tap into other included services, such as Dropbox, VUDU, YouTube, and Picasa. If you want to snag some content from a PC or NAS on the network, the player also has DLNA support.

Other features include HDMI CEC, a USB port, and support for Yamaha’s free AV Controller app for iOS and Android devices.

“The BD-S677 is a very flexible Blu-ray player that strives to eliminate the line between home and mobile entertainment by providing users the ability to share and enjoy their portable device content on televisions within their homes,” said Bob Goedken, general manager of AV products for Yamaha Corporation of America. “Its ease-of-use will provide our customers quick navigation to a wider array of their favorite videos, pictures and music.”

Yamaha will start selling the BD-S677 in April, with an MSRP of $329.95.
