Movies are shot in all sorts of formats: wide 16:9, even wider 2.35:1 (CinemaScope), and other aspect ratios. It can make choosing the right size screen complicated, and that’s why many home theater enthusiasts invest in masking systems. These systems feature rolls of black fabric that cover portions of the screen to alter its shape to fit the aspect ratio of the movie being displayed. The masking is motorized so that all it takes is a touch of a button, but it can still be a bit distracting, not to mention tough to install.
Screen Innovations has ditched the distractions and installation hassles by creating what it calls “the world’s first non-masking, masking system screen.” The Transformer screen is able to shift shape by employing patent-pending telescoping screen technology. This means that it is able to transform its frame size to fit a certain aspect ratio rather than covering the screen surface with material to do so. When the aspect ratio of a video source changes, so does the aspect ratio of the screen, while still maintaining the same look at feel of traditional projection screen. The motorized screen unfurls horizontally to create the perfect-sized area for the image–whether that be a 2.35:1 ultra-wide format, 16:9, or any aspect ratio in between. The screen material wraps around rollers at either side and these rollers extend or contract at the press of a button or automatically based on aspect-ratio metadata. The transformation that happens based on the content being viewed does require addition programming of a home automation system, but the results are stunning.
Screen Innovations designed the Transformer to be used in both dedicated home theaters and multi-purpose media rooms. It can be installed in quickly and is compatible with all types of video projectors. The company was unable to comment on its suggested retail price.
