Back in February, Sony announced the PlayStation 4. We had a few tidbits about the company’s next-gen gaming console, but pricing and availability were notably absent from the festivities.
Well, this week is E3 2013, where gaming manufacturers gather to show off new products, games and concepts. Of course, Sony has more to say — a lot more.
While we still don’t have an exact release date, Sony says that the PlayStation 4 will arrive in time for holiday shopping with a $399 MSRP.
The PS4 has a nice new look, as well as AMD’s 8-core 64-bit x86 central processing unit (CPU), a state of the art graphics processor, 8GB of unified system memory, 176 GB/second of bandwidth performance, and a read-only Blu-ray drive. The console will also have access to Sony’s Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited services, as well as other web-based options such as Netflix.
If you’re itching to play new PS4 games, know that Sony is planning more than 30 PS4-specific titles. #DRIVECLUB, Killzone Shadow Fall and KNACK will all be available at launch, with another 17 coming over the next year.
Sony also detailed new plans for PS Plus, the company’s subscription-based service that puts users in touch with new games and gamers. The service promises exclusive game discounts, cloud game saves, early access to beta programs and content, and access to a library known as the Instant Game Collection. Those goodies will be available across the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita systems for $49.99 per year. There are also options for a three-month membership for $17.99 or a new one-month trial for $9.99.
To welcome the PS4 for the platform, Sony is offering the #DRIVECLUB PS Plus Edition to members as part of the Instant Game Collection. Also, one digital title will be rotated each month, including three of the new digital games introduced during the PlayStation E3 press conference. Don’t Starve, Outlast, and Secret Ponchos will be available at no extra cost via the Instant Game Collection during the first year following the launch of the PS4 system.
Sony will also offer cloud gaming services to PS4 and PS3 users sometime in 2014, with PS Vita access to follow.
“We are proud to unveil today the most advanced gaming system ever created, PlayStation 4, which demonstrates everything PlayStation stands for — a relentless focus on the gamer, an inspired community of developers equipped with the most powerful technology, and the long-standing legacy to building worlds without boundaries through one-of-a-kind gaming experiences,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA. “What’s equally exciting for us, however, is transforming the PlayStation ecosystem into a stronger, more vibrant destination that enables gamers to engage, share, play, and connect on their terms.”
Although there’s still no official release date, the PS4 pre-order process has already begun! Check out the official PlayStation 4 website for more information.
