Just in time for… November, Panasonic is about to release its latest 4K Ultra HD TVs. Both the 65-inch AX900 and 85-inch AX850 will be hitting stores next month.
Both models are THX 4K certified, which means they passed 400 image quality tests in THX’s labs in order to achieve that goal.
The Panasonic AX900 is the top of the two models (though it’s smaller), with full array back lighting (not edge LEDs) and local dimming to allow it to maintain deeper blacks and a better contrast ratio. Panasonic claims that this model doesn’t suffer from the halo effect that other local dimming technologies may produce.
Both models use a new color management system developed for professional products in Panasonic’s Hollywood Laboratories. The goal of the new system is to allow the TVs to produce exceptional color fidelity at any brightness. The AX900 goes a bit further by using extremely transparent LCD panels to achieve a high dynamic range.
The TVs’ built-in video processor senses your room’s ambient light, and will adjust the picture to look best in the TVs current viewing conditions.
Both the AX900 and AX850 include smart TV features powered by a quad-core Pro5 processor. Features include a learning function (called my Stream) which learns users’ preferences and helps curate appropriate content (hopefully this feature can be turned off). An on-screen Info Bar responds to a proximity sensor and smart face detection, so when you approach the TV it automatically turns on and displays new information, such as weather info, time and other messages.

Both models include four HDMI inputs that support 4K 60p video plus one DisplayPort. HDCP2.2 copyright protection technology and an H.265 (HEVC) decoder are also onboard.
Prices for the new TVs aren’t available yet, but as a point of reference, the 65-inch 4K Panasonic AX800 TV goes for $2,999.
