Origin Acoustics Debuts with Director Collection In-Ceiling Speakers

The new lineup includes 13 models from the minds behind SpeakerCraft.

Some companies know how to make an entrance. When Origin Acoustics debuts at next week’s CEDIA Expo, the company will come packing 13 speakers under its Director Collection.

Designed by speaker engineer and SpeakerCraft founder, Ken Humphreys, the Director Collection is a new line of in-ceiling speakers — 13 of them, to be exact. Each of those was designed from the ground up to address two challenges in the in-ceiling category: The limitations in bass response and limited dispersion.

The Director Collection uses a fixed woofer and a new mounting system to reduce the footprint of each speaker. In other words, the 8-inch speaker has the diameter of a typical 6-inch speaker and the line’s 10-inch speaker has the diameter of a typical 8-incher. This translates into an extra 50-percent in cone area for each speaker, without increasing the visible footprint. It also means more bass in a smaller space.

To tackle the dispersion issue, Origin Acoustics created new driver designs and driver locations within the baffle. The company also developed the FocalPoint mid-tweeter module, which can pivot a full 36 degrees.

Other features include ultra-fine perforated grilles and the ZipClip mounting system. The latter is especially interesting. All you need to do is cut the mounting hole and insert the ring. The speaker assembly is then inserted, clipped onto the ring, and locked into place with a little twist.

“We had two years of hardcore thinking to reinvent the in-ceiling category, from performance to installation ease; we accomplished a breakthrough. Origin products are disruptive and new with smaller size footprints on the ceiling, high performance sound quality throughout the room, and a better visual aesthetic,” said Origin CEO Jeremy Burkhardt. “Our patents will cover most every aspect of architectural loudspeakers and I hope to share them to support industry advancement.”

Origin Acoustics will launch the Director Collection with 13 models in late September. There’s currently no additional information available regarding each model. However, prices will range from $400 to $5,000 per pair.
